In this video, LSU AgCenter Extension Associate Courtney shows you how to make delicious protein bites. This simple, no-bake recipe uses oats, peanut butter, milk powder and a few other low-cost ingredients to create a snack that will satisfy your hunger and sweet tooth. Add a few protein bites to a bento box along with your favorite fruits, vegetables, cheese and yogurt to make a nutritious snack that will support babies’ growth and development.
Ingredients:
1 ½ cup rolled oats
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup smooth peanut butter or other smooth nut butter
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup powdered milk
2-4 tablespoons water or milk
1/3 cup raisins
Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, stir together oats and ground cinnamon.
2. Add peanut butter, honey, vanilla extract and powdered milk. Stir well.
3. Then, add water or milk 1 tablespoon at a time. Stir with a spoon until all ingredients are well mixed, and the dough forms a small ball. It should hold together but should not be too wet. If the dough is dry, slowly add more liquid but not too much or it won’t hold its shape.
4. Add raisins and mix.

Healthy eating starts with you! Kids learn by watching the adults around them, so one of the best ways to encourage healthy eating is to model healthy habits yourself. When your child sees you enjoying nutritious foods, they are often more willing to give them a try. Every small bite is a step toward building healthy habits.

Cutting down on sodium can help lower your blood pressure and keep your heart healthy. When eating out, ask the server about dishes that are lower in sodium. Many meals are large enough to split with a friend or take home to enjoy later. Small changes can make a big difference.

Good food makes a great tailgate but let’s remember the food remains safe to eat. Keep cold foods COLD and hot foods HOT. Keep hands, utensils and surfaces clean. Bring the team spirit, bring the flavor and don’t let foodborne illness crash your tailgate.
