Melvin Joseph Lescale, 96, died peacefully at home on July 26, 2026. He was born at 2253 North Prieur Street in New Orleans on December 18, 1929.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Averna Lescale,(who passed 37 days earlier); his sister-in-law Elaine Valentine Jones (14 days earlier), brother-in-law Roy Averna. Melvins’s parents, Henry Edgar Lescale and Antoinette Haisch Lescale, his brothers Henry Lescale Jr., Clement Lescale and by his precious dog, River.

He is survived by his children Leslie Matys (Ed) of Boston, MA; Mark (Albert Palumbo) of New Orleans; Keith (Henrique) of Greenwich, CT; and Lauren Holmes (Bruce) of Austin, TX. He is also survived by his grandchildren Aaron Matys (Meredith), Abbey Sherman (Kevin), Alec Matys (Bri), Paul Holmes, and Kelly Wines (Chris);

his brother-in-law (Wil) of Houston, TX; and his sister‑in‑law Doris Averna (Roy) of Tallahassee, FL. His great‑grandchildren include twins Ari and Ace Matys, Wesley Sherman and newly arrived Louisa Matys (38 days ago). And many nieces and nephews.

Melvin graduated from Aloysius High School in 1946 and earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Loyola University in 1950 at age 20. He began his career at Charity Hospital and Matingly’s Pharmacy before transitioning to Upjohn Pharmaceuticals as a sales representative. In 1952 he joined the Army Reserves, serving ten years and retiring as a Major—earning the nickname “Major Mel.”

In 1959, Melvin opened Lescale’s Pharmacy and soda fountain at 4500 Magnolia Street across from Baptist Hospital. For 30 years, “The Drug Store” became a neighborhood cornerstone where Melvin earned the respect of physicians and patrons alike. It was also a family enterprise; his four children learned customer service, free delivery, and the workings of a community pharmacy, often alongside their grandmother, Memere. These years remain treasured memories of shared work and family closeness.

With weekends off Dad was able to enjoy “The Bay” Bay St Louis was his happy place, “It’s better at the bay” sharing many good times with family and friends -and friends of friends-

He loved crabbing from the pier, enjoying the gulf breezes and a cold beer. Fishing, catamaran sailing, and skiing on the boat he named “Gusto” His Motto “how sweet it is” captured the spirit of those weekends. He truly found his work-life balance, going for the Gusto!

The greatest love of his life was his wife, Lillian. Their marriage was defined by loyalty, affection, shared laughter, and partnership in all things. Together they hosted countless gatherings at the Bay, remembered fondly by friends even decades later. Their passing within weeks of each other stands as a testament to a bond that endured for over 71 years.

In 1982 Dad earned his Doctor of Pharmacy by sponsoring and grandfathering his fellow Loyola graduates. He was able to wear his cap and gown and proudly become Doctor Lescale.

His greatest source of pride was his family, He taught us by example. His life reflected Love, generosity, kindness, and faith. These lessons continue to live on in us, the family he loved so dearly.

In 2005 they moved away, to Austin, Tx in the aftermath of Katrina sharing memories and good times with their daughter’s families and quality time with all five grandchildren. Retuning to New Orleans in 2015 settling in on their home on the Bayou. They know what it means to miss New Orleans.

Active member of The Drug Club, Pharmacy museum, Loyola Alumni, Knights of Columbus, and Venus Carnival Krewe reigning as forever King Venus.

The Family would like to recognize and thank the wonderful care of Sarah (Cookie) of Heart for Hospice who made it possible for Dad to spend his last days well cared for at home as he wanted.

Gloria Elizabeth Salloum Newman, 99, passed away at home on July 26, 2026 surrounded by her family.

Born on March 12, 1927, in Gulfport, Mississippi, Gloria was the beloved daughter of Fadwa Zahra and George Salloum. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Sam Mike Newman; and her siblings, Melvina, Beatrice, Edmond "Bubba," Evelyn, Gladys, Ellis, Georgia, Kaleel "Teal," and Sadie.

A natural leader from an early age, Gloria graduated from Gulfport High School in 1945, where she proudly served as the school's first female student body president, holding the office for three years. She was recognized with both the Good Citizenship Award and the Friendliest Girl Award. Athletic and competitive, she lettered in basketball for four years and enjoyed softball, tennis, and nearly any sport she had the opportunity to play, including golf later in life. She later graduated from Gulf Park College in 1947.

In 1954, she married Sam Mike Newman of Bogalusa, Louisiana, and together they made their home in New Orleans, where they built a life centered on faith, family, friendship, and community.

She is survived by her children, Patricia Mickal (Schaffer), Martha Solomon (Gary), Jean Miller (Jim), and Gloria Provosty (Saint). She was especially proud to be "Nanny G" to her grandchildren, Gary Solomon Jr. (Seth Bloom), Sam Mickal Solomon (Ashley), Conway Solomon, Kendall Mickal Hamide (John), Schaffer "Shay" Mickal, Jordan Conway Helm (Ryan), Layne Miller Gegenheimer (Matthew), and Charles Connor Miller, and to her great-grandchildren, Olivia, Sam Jr., Twyla, Gary III, Molly, Logan, and Safiya.

The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to Lisa Labit, Sue Cerise, and Deborah Davenport for the extraordinary care they gave Gloria.

Faith was the foundation of Gloria's life. She was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church in Gulfport, where she served as President of the Ladies Sodality. After moving to New Orleans, she became a devoted parishioner of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church and later St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Gloria embraced life with remarkable enthusiasm and a fierce spirit. She loved to dance, entertain, dress in costume for every occasion, surround herself with beautiful flowers, and fill her home with family and friends. A consummate host, she believed there was always a reason to celebrate, usually with a Cosmopolitan in hand.

She especially loved sports and was a devoted fan of Ole Miss, Notre Dame, and above all, the New Orleans Saints. A faithful fan for more than 36 seasons, she missed only five home games before health finally kept her from her regular seat in the Superdome.

Her guiding principle was simple: God first, family, then friends. She believed deeply in serving others and giving back to her community. Gloria was a member of the Oak Park Garden Club and the Lake Terrace Garden Club, where she served as President, became an Honorary Member, and volunteered on numerous committees. She was also a proud member of the Syrian Lebanese American Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Mrs. George Salloum Trust, 708 Klondyke Road, Long Beach, Mississippi 39560, a charitable fund supporting collegiate educational opportunities for students and families in financial need.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at St. Louis Cathedral. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m., with Mass at 12:00 noon. A private entombment will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home.

Her greatest joy was her family. But when asked the secret to reaching 99 years of age, Gloria's answer was always the same: dancing and football. She also left her family with two final instructions. In honor of her love for the New Orleans Saints, she asked that those attending her services add a touch of gold to their black attire.

And finally, she insisted that her obituary end with the only words she felt were appropriate...

Ione Mary Ann Duhe Killian passed away peacefully at home on July 20, 2026 at the age of 84. Born on May 11, 1942, to Norman and Elizabeth Duhe, she was one of six children including a twin brother. She grew up in Lutcher, LA and moved to New Orleans in her teens where she graduated from Alcee Fortier High School. Ione was a Parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Orleans where she attended mass with her daughters.

Ione met John Killian on a blind date and six months later they were married on August 24, 1968 at St. Stephen’s Church in New Orleans. Shortly thereafter they settled in Kenner, LA where they raised five children and remained lifelong residents. Ione was a dedicated homemaker and the heart of her family. After raising her children, she poured her love into the next generation as a very hands-on Mawmaw to seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Caring for her family was her greatest joy. The only thing Ione loved as much as her family was Mardi Gras. She would always find her way to the front of the crowd and had a knack for getting the best throws.

Ione was preceded in death by her parents Norman and Elizabeth Duhe; and siblings Gilbert, Michael, Melvin, Norman Jr., and her twin brother Ronald Duhe.

She will be dearly missed by her husband of 58 years, John “Donny” Killian Jr. and her five children: Donna Blady (Darren), David “Tim” Killian (Jennifer), John “J.P.” Killian (Audrey), Michelle Tuggle (Troy), and John “Charlie” Killian III (Keri); her grandchildren Paige Murphy (Joseph), Lauren Cemo (Mason), Dylan Blady, Cole Killian, Crystal Killian, Ashley Killian, and Renée Killian; and two great-grandchildren Maximus and Anderson Murphy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St in New Orleans, followed by Mass celebrated in the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Phyllis Adrienne Allison (née Cohen), a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, companion, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Metairie on July 18, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was 78 years old.

Born in New Orleans on May 12, 1948, to the late Elias and Bella Cohen, Phyllis graduated from Fortier High School before earning her degree from Loyola University. She went on to touch many lives in the community through her long and dedicated career as a dental hygienist.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dean P. Allison. She is survived by her son, Eric Allison, her daughter, Dayna Tribe, and her son-in-law, Hondo. She was the proud grandmother of Elias, Micah, and Abel Tribe. She is also survived by her devoted brother, Gerald Cohen; her niece, Jane Cohen Alexander, and her family, Chuck, Addie, and Gabe; her nephew, Jeffrey Cohen, and his family, Izzi, Sadie, and Eva; and her dear companion, Seth Silverstein. And Neil. They knew her as Baba, Frima, Frim, and Phissy.

A vibrant part of her community, Phyllis spent her life embracing the things she loved most: traveling, attending the theater, and being an active member of her congregation and choir at Congregation Gates of Prayer. Above all else, Phyllis poured her heart into her friends and family, who loved her just as fiercely in return. She took great pride in being a source of strength and kindness for her family, and her family loved her for it. Everyone knew her by her exceptional smile and her farfel cookies.

And, in her last months, she was loved and cared for by some of the most amazing women -- including Jackie White, Dionne Webb, Trenese Costello, and Brenetta Smith.

A graveside burial will be held at Hebrew Rest #3 on Monday, July 20 at 2:00 p.m., followed by a gathering for family and friends at Congregation Gates of Prayer.

On July 18, 2026, Carrie Ann Arvello Castrogiovanni, surrounded by her family, was delivered home to reunite with her husband, Dr. Jack C. Castrogiovanni M.D., as well as her parents, Brazil John Arvello Sr. and Lena Tamborella Arvello. She was the longest surviving of eight brothers and sisters, Paul Arvello, Lawrence Arvello, Brazil (Junior) Arvello, Salvadore (Sam) Arvello, Joseph Arvello, Lena Arvello Letillier, and Mary Arvello Miller. She was 82.

She leaves behind a loving family of four children and four grandchildren. Nicholas Brazil Castrogiovanni, Jeanine Castrogiovanni Burgan (Ryan), Jacquelyn Castrogiovanni Migdal (John), and Giacomo Antonio Castrogiovanni (Jordan), as well as her beautiful grandchildren who doted on her: Marley Grace Migdal, Miles Edward Migdal, Giacomo (Jack) Calcedonio Castrogiovanni, II, & Vittoria Elizabeth Castrogiovanni.

Carrie Ann was born on January 31, 1944, in Independence Louisiana, and lived the majority of her youth in Hammond. She began her younger years as a medical stenographer (where she met her husband to be, Dr. Jack) and eventually earned her Bachelor of English and then her Masters in English, Summa Cum Laude, at the University of New Orleans. She worked as a real estate agent and taught as a substitute teacher at the high school level.

She was highly involved in and held leadership positions (board member, president, vice-president, historian, treasurer, secretary) in many philanthropic and social organizations including the Elenian Club, Aesculapians, the Lake Vista Garden Club, Lake Vista Women’s Club, Heart Ambassadors, Cancer Crusaders, Orleans Parish Medical Society Alliance, Volunteers of America Auxiliary, Louisiana State Medical Society Alliance, Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services, Our Lady of Holy Cross College, Children’s Hospital Guild, St. Michael’s, and the Heart Ambassadors.

She coordinated fundraisers and events benefiting educational funds for nurses and medical assistants, children’s playgrounds, the families of deceased physicians, and a myriad of other charitable interests. She was a voracious reader, having read tens of thousands of books over her lifetime. She especially loved horror fiction and Southern literature; and enjoyed comedic films above melodrama.

She was also socially active in Mardi Gras festivities, particularly in the Krewe of Eros (both of her daughters enjoyed being Queen, and her husband King) and the Krewe of Pontchartrain. Carrie endured twenty-five years of Parkinsons disease and bore it with a brave face. Although she suffered, she did not complain and instead chose to focus on the bright parts of life. She enjoyed visiting with friends, the company of her adult children, and above all else her grandchildren.

Carrie and the family would like to extend a special thanks to Magnolia Caregivers whose exceptional attention and tireless work served to make the most difficult years of her life more enjoyable.

Family and friends are invited to attend the evening visitation scheduled for Friday July 24, 2026, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Jacob Schoen & Son, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 1:00 PM on Saturday July 25, 2026, at St. Dominic’s Church, 775 Harrison Ave, New Orleans, LA 70124. Visitation will be from 11:00 am and continue until mass time. Interment will follow at All Saints Mausoleum directly afterwards.

Robert Paul Guastella—"Bob" to most and "Bobby" to a few—passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2026, in New Orleans, the city where he was born, lived, helped build, and truly loved. As a builder, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, and friend, he will be dearly missed by many. With arguably the best head of hair ever created, his infectious laugh and generous smile brightened the lives of all who were lucky enough to know him. Bob never met a stranger, and his charm and mischievous sense of humor endeared him to all.

He was the son of Antonina and Rosario Guastella, and brother to Rosario Guastella, Jr. and Ronald Guastella, all of whom he has now joined in heaven.

He leaves behind a very large family who will remember him with great joy, admiration, and appreciation. This includes his wife and friend of 48 years, Debra Rodriguez Guastella; his children, Catherine and Mike Cooper, Roxanne and Donald Guastella, Christy and David Guastella, Darren and Cindy Guastella, Deborah and Nick Nolfe, and Courtney Guastella and William Callihan; his grandchildren, Rachel and Whitney Brown, Allie and Duncan Brown, Christina and Justin Ledet, Priscilla and Donald Guastella, Jr., Jessica Guastella, Zoe Guastella, Chloe Lemoine, Isabella Nolfe, Joseph Nolfe, and Elliot Callihan; and 12 beloved great-grandchildren... and still counting.

While this is the family he made, Bob was also enormously proud of and grateful for the family of dear friends he created, with whom he shared incredible memories. Bob loved people, dogs, a good martini, oysters, and the beach. He was an amateur meteorologist and was known for his ability to "track a system". His wanderlust brought him to all corners of the world, and his fearless ingenuity built homes, apartment buildings, hotels, and restaurants across New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. He had an unrelenting sweet tooth and a deep devotion to news channels and sports. Bob had an enormous heart that unfortunately could not keep up with his endless spirit, but he will live on through the hearts of all who loved him.

He attended St. Stanislous School in Bay St. Louis, MS and graduated from St. Aloysius High School and Loyola University; both located in New Orleans.

A mass will be held in his memory Monday, July 27th at Schoen Funeral Home in New Orleans with visitation at 2:00 PM and mass at 3:00 PM.
