Applications are now open for NOBPC’s Honorary Mentorship Program ✨

Designed for students, emerging clinicians, scholars, and curious thinkers from a wide range of backgrounds, this unique program offers participants the opportunity to connect with experienced psychoanalysts and engage deeply with psychoanalytic thought and practice.

Through mentorship, NOBPC activities, and exposure to both local and nationally recognized analytic voices, mentees are invited into a rich intellectual and professional community grounded in curiosity, reflection, and meaningful dialogue.

For the 2025–2026 academic year, we were proud to welcome nine exceptional mentees, each bringing their own perspective and passion for psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. We look forward to continuing to grow this vibrant program and supporting the next generation of analytic thinkers.

Applications are accepted annually from May 1–August 15.
Applicants must submit:
• A current resumé
• One letter of recommendation

We warmly encourage applicants from diverse educational and professional backgrounds to apply. 🤍

“Joan’s Wire Hangers: Reconciling That Recollection is the Best Fake We Have on Hand”
Through the lenses of psychoanalysis, memory, and cultural reinvention, we’ll explore Joan Crawford, the contested narratives surrounding her life, and the film’s unexpected second life in drag culture. Drawing on Freud’s ideas about memory and recollection, this discussion examines how stories are retold, reimagined, and transformed over time.

Join us this Saturday, June 27th for the first installment of our 3-part Psychoanalysis & Cinema Film Series at the New Orleans-Birmingham Psychoanalytic Center.

On Saturday, we’ll screen Phantom Thread — a haunting psychological drama exploring control, dependency, obsession, and surrender through the complex relationship between Reynolds Woodcock and Alma. Drawing from the work of Sigmund Freud, Wilhelm Reich, David Shapiro, and Ruth Ben-Ghiat, our discussion will examine the “Strongman” personality structure and the paradoxes of dominance, vulnerability, and emotional need.

Psychotherapists do not always consider the importance of names in their work. Yet a name can carry secret wishes, internal conflicts, transgenerational traumas, and hidden identifications.
 
Mikita Brottman, PhD, will present on her paper, “Nomen Est Omen: A Psychoanalytic Exploration of Names.” She will discuss how personal names and naming are shaped by unconscious dynamics, implicit associations, cultural influences, and relationships to parents.
Dr. Brottman will also analyze associations with certain names, names in relation to the structure of the ego, and the use of names in clinical practice.
 
Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the significance of names within psychoanalysis and in the inner lives of their patients.
