Boundaries vs. Rules in Relationships šŸ’›

They can sound similar, but there’s an important difference.

A boundary communicates what you are comfortable with and what you will do to take care of yourself.

A rule tells someone else what they can or cannot do.

For example:

šŸ—£ļø Boundary: ā€œIf we start yelling at each other, I’m going to take a break and come back to the conversation when we’re calmer.ā€

🚫 Rule: ā€œYou’re not allowed to get angry with me.ā€

Healthy relationships need boundaries. They help create respect, safety, and clear communication without trying to control another person.

Boundaries aren’t about controlling someone else—they’re about knowing what you need and what you’re willing to accept in a relationship. šŸ’š

Gender is something we all experience, but not everyone experiences it in the same way. šŸ’œ

Understanding the difference between gender identity and gender expression, as well as terms like transgender, nonbinary, and cisgender, can help us have more respectful and inclusive conversations.

Learning the language is one small step toward creating spaces where people feel seen, respected, and safe to be themselves. 🌈

Gender can be a complicated topic, but understanding the different pieces can make it a little easier to talk about. šŸ’›

The Genderbread Person is a helpful visual for understanding that gender identity, gender expression, biological s*x, and s*xual orientation are different things. They can overlap, but one does not automatically determine another.

Learning about these differences helps us have more respectful, informed conversations—and reminds us that everyone’s experience is unique.

There’s always more to learn, and that’s a good thing. 🌈

Something as simple as using someone’s correct pronouns can make a meaningful difference. šŸ’›

For transgender and nonbinary people, being seen, respected, and affirmed matters. Asking someone what pronouns they use—and making an effort to use them—is a small way to show care and support.

You might make a mistake sometimes. That’s okay. Correct yourself, keep going, and keep learning.

Respect costs nothing, but it can mean so much. šŸ³ļøā€āš§ļø

Ever have something to talk about after a session and it goes right out your head before the next session? That's why keeping a therapy notebook can be beneficial so that those things don't get missed during therapy.

Finding the right therapist is about more than credentials. It’s about finding someone you feel understood, respected, and comfortable working with. šŸ’š

It’s okay to ask questions about their experience, approach, communication style, and whether they think you’d be a good fit.

Therapy is a relationship, and the right fit can make a meaningful difference. You don’t have to settle for someone who doesn’t feel right for you.

Ever sit down for therapy and think, ā€œI have absolutely nothing to talk aboutā€? You’re not alone. ā¤ļø

Therapy doesn’t have to be a performance, and you don’t need to show up with a list of problems. Sometimes the smallest things—something you enjoyed, a moment you felt safe, a body sensation, or even the effort it took to find something to say—can open the door to something meaningful.

You don’t have to have all the answers before you walk into therapy. Sometimes, figuring out where to start is part of the work.
