🐾 New research just gave us a fascinating peek into how food ages our dogs — literally, at the DNA level.

A pilot study published in Veterinary Record Open tracked dogs using something called an epigenetic clock — it reads chemical markers on DNA that shift in predictable patterns as animals age. Biological age (not just birthday age) is what actually drives disease risk.

Researchers switched a group of pugs from kibble to a minimally processed, human-grade diet. Within six months, the dogs on the fresher diet showed a measurably slower rate of biological aging compared to the ones who stayed on kibble.

Why would that be? Highly processed diets tend to promote chronic low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress — both of which speed up those DNA changes. Minimally processed food keeps more of its natural nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber intact, which supports the body’s own cellular defenses. Researchers also flagged excess linoleic acid from seed oils (common in both processed pet food AND processed human food, by the way) as a likely contributor to the damage.

Now, I want to be straight with you: this was a small study — 25 pugs total, one breed, uneven group sizes, six months. It’s not the final word. But it lines up with what we already know from human research: how processed your food is isn’t a trivial detail. It shapes aging at the cellular level — for you and for your dog.

Something to think about at the next bag of food (or bowl of dinner). šŸ¶šŸ„—

Stress doesn’t stay in your head. It settles into the body — yours, and your pets’ too.

One of our regular patients recently drove her two dogs across several states to stay with family while she traveled to Europe. Long car rides, a new environment, time away from routine — increased physical and mental stress for everyone.

She already knows the drill. When life gets bumpy, bodies need a tune-up. So she came in for her adjustment and brought her pets along for theirs too.

Feeling good after a stressful stretch isn’t a coincidence. It’s maintenance.

Been traveling or just running on stress lately? Tell us in the comments — how do you and your pets recover after a big trip? And if it’s been a while, let’s get everyone back on track. 🐾

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve competed in Vegas. This year, I’m on the sidelines instead of in the middle of the chaos — which means I get to send this reminder without the pre-show scramble.

If you’re competing this season — mounted shooting, barrel racing, reining, any event that has you loading up and hauling out — get your horse tuned up. Before and after.

We talk a lot about the physical stress: tight turns, sudden direction changes, the demands we ask their bodies to absorb in a run. But the mental load is just as real — lights on 24 hours a day, small stalls, a completely unfamiliar barn, parties going late into the night. Our horses feel all of it, even on the days they’re not the ones running the pattern.

A pre-comp adjustment helps them go in feeling their best. A post-comp adjustment helps them recover from what their body — and nervous system — just absorbed, so they come home ready to rest instead of still holding onto the weekend.

Wishing everyone heading out this season a safe, fast run. And if your horse needs a tune-up before or after — you know where to find us. 480-603-5915 🐓

Sampson is an older pit bull whose family was preparing for the end. One week and three adjustments later — he’s bounding across the yard looking for his ball. šŸ¾šŸ’™

His mom sent us this after visit three, and we’re not editing a word of it:

ā€œWe have ramped up and I didn’t catch it on video but he was bounding across the yard and looking for his ball! One week and we went from preparing for the end to let’s freaking go! Can’t thank you enough. I wish more people understood that one adjustment isn’t going to fix it. You need to hit every other day or two until they settle. Can’t thank you enough!!ā€

This is exactly why we talk about consistency so much. One adjustment doesn’t fix a body that’s been compensating for a long time — it takes a series, close together at first, to let the nervous system actually settle into the change. Sampson’s swim (post-adjustment #1, in the video) was the first sign. The yard sprints one week later? That’s the payoff.

If your older dog (or horse, or barn cat) has been slowing down and you’ve chalked it up to ā€œjust getting oldā€ — it might not be. Give us a call: 480-603-5915 🐾

After a summer competition weekend, watch how your horse moves when they get home.

Hauling, new footing, heat, competition runs, long rides, and extra standing around can all ask a lot from the body.

A few things to notice:

• Does your horse seem stiffer than usual coming out of the trailer?
• Are they bending easier one direction than the other?
• Do they feel uneven during warm-up?
• Are they more resistant when saddling or picking up a lead?
• Do they seem slower to recover after the trip?

These small changes do not always mean something major is wrong, but they can be signs your horse may need more movement and body support.

Animal chiropractic care looks at how the spine and joints are moving so we can help support better comfort, movement, and function.

If your horse is traveling for summer competitions, message us to ask about barn-call availability.

Barn calls this Thursday in Rio Verde!

07/06/2026

Hauling out for summer competitions? Get your horse on the barn-call schedule before the week fills up.

Arizona heat has a lot of horse owners traveling to cooler places to compete, and hauling can ask a lot from a horse’s body.

Long trailer rides, new footing, harder competition days, and extra time on the road can all show up in how your horse moves, bends, recovers, or feels under saddle.

Animal chiropractic care looks at how the spine and joints are moving so we can help support better movement, comfort, and function before or after travel.

I’ll be doing barn calls in the Rio Verde area this Thursday and have room for a few more horses.

Message us to get on the schedule.

This is Bisbee. 🐓

She’s a barrel horse — tight turns at fast speed, over and over. That’s a lot to ask of one body.

Her owner Page knows the subtle signs something’s off. Bisbee will start pinning her ears when she gets saddled. That’s not attitude — that’s communication.

So Page keeps her tuned up. Regular chiropractic care keeps Bisbee loose, balanced, and sound, so she can fly around those barrels feeling her best.

Here’s the thing: horses, dogs, and cats can’t tell us when something hurts. They just compensate… until they can’t.

When’s the last time YOUR animal got checked?

Message us or call — let’s keep them moving their best. šŸŽ 480-603-5915
