Meet Rosalind Glasper-Gregg, fierce self-advocate and proud graduate of CPU’s Adult Education series. She delivered the following remarks at the Staten Island Disability Pride celebration:
“My name is Rosalind Glasper-Gregg I’m an African American woman who wears glasses, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair to navigate my everyday life. One of my accomplishments is that I have been married over 35 years and I have been working for over 16 years at SecurEDoc. I also have been a part of the self-advocacy committee for many years. I don’t only advocate for myself, I also advocate for other people with disabilities.
I enjoy being part of the Adult Education Series with Melissa for over 12 years where I can advocate for things that I want to learn about. This past year I learned about the Declaration of Independence, IDEA, ADA and how they all connect. Thanks to these rights I am able to achieve my accomplishments but I still face daily barriers.
Accessibility is key to living independently but we still have many areas to improve on. For example, in my community I cannot go into the coffee shop, deli, or the church next to me because it is not accessible. We need more accessible transportation because Access-A-Ride is not always dependable. Every year we face budget cuts which add to the barriers that people with disabilities face including important services that we need.
Disability rights have come a long way, but we still have a lot of work to do to truly make this world accessible for ALL.”
