Nancy Reagan was First Lady of the United States for eight years. In 1994, her husband Ronald was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and Nancy became his primary caregiver for the next ten years, until his death in 2004.

There's a federal program called GUIDE that may give dementia caregivers up to $2,600+ toward paid help. We hear caregivers say the same thing every time we post about it: it's not enough.

They're right. At the national median cost of professional in-home care ($35/hour, based on 2026 industry data), $2,600 covers about 74 hours of help across an entire year. That's a little over an hour a week.

A few things worth knowing: GUIDE requires original Medicare Parts A & B, not Medicare Advantage. It's not Medicaid and it's not based on income or assets. And if you're already caregiving right now, you're not too late, current caregivers are exactly who this is for.

It's not enough, but it's also not nothing. We think it's worth claiming while caregivers keep pushing for more.

If you're on Vi**ra, the medication EMS uses for heart attacks could kill you instead.

Here's the science behind it. When someone is having a heart attack, EMS often gives nitroglycerin right away. It relaxes and widens blood vessels, which eases the strain on the heart and helps restore blood flow while the patient gets to a hospital.

Vi**ra (sildenafil) works through a similar pathway in the body. It also relaxes blood vessels, which is why it's prescribed for pulmonary arterial hypertension, high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. Older adults are more likely to be prescribed it for this reason, not the one most people assume.

The problem is what happens when both are in the system at once. Nitroglycerin and sildenafil both amplify the same blood-vessel-widening effect. Instead of the body handling one dilation event, it's hit with two stacked on top of each other. Blood pressure can drop so fast and so far that the heart isn't getting enough blood flow to function, which can lead to shock or death. This is a known, documented interaction. It's why EMS protocols always ask about erectile dysfunction or blood pressure medications before administering nitroglycerin.

The catch is that in a real emergency, there's often no time to ask. The patient may not be able to answer. Family members may not be reachable. And EMS has no way of knowing what's in someone's medicine cabinet.

Someone fed you, taught you to walk, sat with you through fevers and heartbreak and everything in between. That's not a debt. It's a cycle. And now it's reaching back around to them.

Michael Jordan just donated $10 million to open a new neuroscience institute in his hometown of Wilmington, named the Novant Health Deloris P. Jordan Neurosciences Institute in honor of his mother.

The Institute is expanding access to advanced brain health care across southeastern North Carolina, with programs covering Alzheimer's diagnosis, stroke, Parkinson's disease, and other complex conditions. It builds on a long-standing partnership between Jordan and Novant Health that already includes four family medical clinics serving underserved communities in Wilmington and Charlotte, and brings his total giving to the Novant Health Foundation to $27 million.

For families facing a loved one's memory loss, getting a clear and timely diagnosis is often the hardest and slowest part of the process. Facilities like this one mean shorter waits, more specialists, and better answers for the families who need them most.

There's a federal program most caregivers have never heard of.

It's called GUIDE, short for Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience.

Launched in 2024 by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, it was built because family caregivers had become one of the most overlooked parts of the entire healthcare system, carrying enormous responsibility with almost no formal support.

GUIDE is built for people with dementia and the families caring for them, and may give caregivers of eligible Medicare enrollees up to $2,600+ in respite care.

If the person you're caring for has original Medicare, Parts A and B, this may apply to them.

GUIDE is a Medicare program that includes a dedicated care navigator, up to $2,600+ a year in respite care, and 24/7 support access.

The $2,600+ figure is specifically for respite, a paid break for the caregiver, not a cap on the full cost of care. And it's only available when the person with dementia has Original Medicare, Parts A & B. Medicare Advantage plans aren't eligible.
