Oxytocin is considered the β€œlove” hormone and is a neuropeptide created in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus.

Oxytocin release results in increased empathy, bonding, social behavior, and decreased anxiety and fear.

Long mutual eye contact between dogs and their owners triggers oxytocin release in both the dog and owner. Petting your dog also results in oxytocin release.

This is similar to the process of infants bonding to caregivers. Oxytocin is released with physical touch and sustained eye contact.

In dog owners who sustain eye contact with their dog, oxytocin increase by roughly 300%. In dogs who sustain eye contact with their owners oxytocin increases by about 130%.

Oxytocin helps us feel connected and content, minimizing stress and enhancing peace.

Ego dissolution from psychedel!cs feels like a total, temporary dissolution of your sense of self, and boundary between β€œyou” and the universe.

Individuals describe a profound feeling of interconnectedness to everything around them, with boundaries between self and the external world disappearing.

This is related to a decrease in activity of the brains default mode network- responsible for creating a sense of self.

During what we call preparatory sessions the therapist helps set intentions, realistic expectations, reviews the effects of the psychedel!c drug, and teaches grounding techniques to help sit with discomfort that may arise on the dosing day.

Expecting to never feel sad again is an unrealistic expectation and impossible intention to fulfill. Helping set realistic and attainable intentions is important going into the experience.

The second example is a realistic and well thought out intention. Reflecting on current challenges and cultivating insight are attainable goals going into the dosing experience.

Set and setting is extremely important in psychedel!c assisted therapy.

Set is your mindset going into the experience and setting is the external environment.

Settings that are sterile with medical equipment and white walls tend to increase the likelihood of having a negative experience or β€œbad” trip.

Settings that emulate a cozy living room with warm lighting and comfortable furniture tend to increase the likelihood of a positive experience or β€œgood” trip.

What are some things to take into consideration before starting ketamine treatment?

Often times patients come in with high expectations thinking that ketamine treatment will be a fix all.

We want to set realistic expectations for patients and also assess what other co-morbidities that are likely contributing to the current symptom burden.

How do we find peace in a world full of unpredictability?

We find a way to decondition ourselves.

We don’t say β€œI will feel happy when…”

Or β€œ If this didn’t happen I would be so much happier..”

We all cling to ideas of how the world should be instead of accepting what it is.

When we realize that everything limited is relative, and that this form we experience is also just a relative reality, we begin to connect to something deeper.

We see that we are not our minds thoughts or feelings, or our bodies pain and pleasures.

We are the observer of these processes occuring within us.

This is no different than being the observer of the things happening outside of you.

We don’t usually tell ourselves we are a beautiful sunset we see because somehow this feels more absurd than saying we are unhappy. You are really saying the same thing though.

You are the observer of thoughts, feelings, and external events.

Learning to decondition and seperate yourself from your mind opens up a vastness that events cannot influence- this is what it means to live a spiritual life ✨

The intention behind therapy is to bring peace of mind, minimize suffering and enhance the appreciation of life.

Learning to bring your conscious awareness to each moment helps create therapeutic energy that is felt within and emanates around you.

Do the things that make time stand still- when effort-fullness feels effortless.

Once you feel this truest part of who you are, you can bring this with you everywhere.

Heal yourself, heal the world.

You don’t have to sit in silent meditation to live mindfully.

When you feel completely immersed in your daily experiences, you feel a deeper connection to the timeless, truest reality of life.

This can help you find a deeper sense of meaning that brings peace, clarity and gratitude.

I used to despise running for the sake of running. It held me back in sports because it was too much running during practices and I quit sports teams because of this.

I am a believer in confronting the things that hold you back from reaching your full potential- running was this for me.

I started slow with 5ks, then half marathons and now my first ever full marathon.

Running has helped me learn to sit with discomfort, push my limits and be kind to myself- because some days are better than others.

Don’t be afraid to do the things you initially dislike, especially when they interfere with your goals. When you learn to sit with discomfort you empower yourself and the sky is the limit!
