Do Black women get eating disorders? 💭

As BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month concludes, I want to reflect on a presentation I delivered in May at the Redefine Strong: Black Women's Mental Health Conference. It was an honor and a joy to speak to a room full of Clinicians of Color about eating disorders among Black women at a conference dedicated to the mental health of Black girls and women.

In my presentation, I addressed the damaging stereotype that eating disorders are exclusive to thin white women—a misconception perpetuated by the media and a lack of diverse voices in discussions about these disorders. It's crucial to recognize that eating disorders can affect individuals of any race, and we must engage in conversations that challenge these stereotypes to provide support for our community.

Unfortunately, discussing mental health within our community is still considered taboo and stigmatized, leaving Black women to suffer in silence. We must remember that eating disorders are mental health issues that can impact ANYONE!!!

To answer the question, yes, Black women do experience eating disorders.
