The dominant clinical narrative frames trauma as a memory storage problem. Predictive processing theory dismantles that.
Under Friston's free energy principle, the brain does not passively record experience. It functions as a Bayesian inference engine, continuously generating predictions about incoming sensory and interoceptive signals and updating its generative model when those predictions are violated. Traumatic experience does not simply consolidate as episodic memory. It recalibrates the brain's prior, encoding the world as chronically threatening at the level of the generative model itself.
The clinical consequence is precise: what presents as hypervigilance, emotional dysregulation, or somatic reactivity in trauma survivors is not a failure of affect regulation. It is a high-precision predictive system executing correctly against a corrupted prior. The body is not overreacting. It is following instructions.
This reframe carries direct therapeutic implications. Interventions that target memory narrative alone do not reach the generative model. Effective treatment must update the prior through repeated disconfirmation of threat predictions, which is why exposure-based and somatic approaches produce structural change where psychoeducation alone does not.
