đź“– Back to the books.
I recently started rereading Sober Is Dope by Pop Buchanan, and even in the preface I was reminded of something that I wish more people knew.
Recovery doesn’t have to end because of a relapse.
One of the biggest takeaways so far is that if someone relapses and they’re fortunate enough to wake up the next day, they don’t have to wait until Monday, next month, or next year to start over. They can begin again today.
Shame often says, “You already messed up, so what’s the point?”
Recovery says, “Start where you are.”
Another thing I appreciated is that healing doesn’t look exactly the same for everyone. There are multiple legitimate paths to recovery, and different people benefit from different combinations of support. What matters is finding what genuinely helps you build and protect your recovery.
For me, that has included treatment, therapy, the 12 Steps, fitness, community, learning about how addiction affects the brain, and continuing to stay teachable. Recovery has never been about being perfect. It’s been about continuing to grow.
As I reread this book, I’m going to share the insights that genuinely challenge me or help me see recovery differently. If something helps me, maybe it’ll help someone else too.
If you’re in recovery, supporting someone who is, or simply trying to become a healthier version of yourself, I hope you’ll follow along.
Question for you: What’s one book, quote, or lesson that’s changed the way you think about recovery or healing?
Save this for someone who might need the reminder that one difficult day doesn’t erase all of their progress. ❤️
