Bilirubin Metabolism Explained

Bilirubin is produced when old red blood cells break down. It travels to the liver bound to albumin, where it is conjugated and becomes water-soluble. The liver excretes it into bile, intestinal bacteria convert it to urobilinogen, and it is finally eliminated as stercobilin in f***s and urobilin in urine.

Understanding this pathway helps interpret liver function tests, jaundice, hemolytic disorders, and biliary obstruction.
