If a family is concerned about their child’s expressive language skills, I often begin to ask questions about ways in which their child is initiating communication, or how the child independently and intentionally communicates a message to their communication partner. 🗣 Remember that a child doesn’t have to be talking to initiate communication! ✨ On the blog, I’m talking about one of my favorite topics: initiation of communication. 🙌🏼 I’m answering all of your questions related to what it means to initiate communication & why initiation is essential for continued speech and language development.

There’s a few new faces around here, so I thought it was time for an introduction! ✨ I’m Anna and I’m the owner and SLP behind . 👋🏼

I provide teletherapy and home-based speech therapy for kids with a range of speech and language diagnoses in and around New York City. 🗣 I’m really passionate about the work I do and feel so fortunate to collaborate with very dedicated families! Many parents of children who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to communicate report feeling overwhelmed when incorporating their child’s AAC system during everyday routines. There is no doubt that it can be challenging for parents to know where to begin with a picture communication board or speech-generating device (SGD) after a speech therapy session.📱

For this reason, I frequently work with families to choose a core word of the week, or one reusable word (e.g., “Go,” “Turn,” “Put”) that parents repeatedly model during everyday routines and play throughout the week. 🍽📚 This strategy makes modeling AAC less of an abstract concept and breaks it down such that families feel really successful using and incorporating their child’s AAC system week to week. ✨ On the blog, I’m talking all about the benefits of choosing a core word of the week! 🙌🏼 Link in bio! ☺️

On the blog, I'm sharing tips and tricks for making a speech therapy home practice program work for you and your family's busy schedule. ✨ Kids make so much more progress when communication strategies are carried out throughout the week rather than just during speech sessions 1 to 2 times per week. 👏🏼

When I see toddlers for an initial evaluation, almost every parent asks, “How long will my child need speech therapy?” While it’s impossible to predict an exact timeline for therapy, a strong body of research provides us with factors that best predict recovery from a speech and language delay versus one that persists over time, or a speech and language disorder. 📖
