This quote from Brian Tracy works well with the DBT concept of building a life worth living. In order to truly build a meaningful life, you first need to commit to facing what you want to change about your life head on. Then, identify your most important values (e.g., honesty, being kind towards others, being productive, etc.) and choose one that you could be living more fully to start working towards. Set concrete goals that will bring this value into your life, choose one to start on, and begin taking action steps (no matter how small) towards accomplishing that goal. Working towards any challenging goal can bring up thoughts of self-doubt or distressing emotions, so using emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills along the way will help you achieve the balance Tracy is talking about. This all might sound daunting, but just start with the first step first and take it from there! And don’t be discouraged if you find you need a little help with this. Supporting people to do this important work is one of the main ways therapists at CWML help their clients thrive. You don’t have to do it alone!
