This week’s featured pet is Duke, an eleven-year-old dog who loves to nap and chase squirrels! Duke is great at the DBT PL.E.A.S.E. skill, but could still use some practice with Checking the Facts whenever anyone arrives at his home. Have you ever noticed that your pet’s behavior is a good example of a DBT skill? Tell us in the comments below!

According to DBT, there are only four types of solutions to any problem you might face. They are solving the problem, figuring out how to feel better about the problem, working on tolerating the problem, and staying miserable. Solving the problem can include leaving or changing the situation. Feeling better about the problem usually involves using emotional regulation skills, and tolerating the problem can be accomplished using distress tolerance skills and radical acceptance. But to stay miserable, you simply don’t use any skills at all. Sounds like that would be easier; it certainly takes less upfront effort. But if you’ve ever tried this method, you know…it's miserable and exhausting! Try some skills!

This quote, attributed to Confucius, reminds us that mistakes are part of being human. If you find yourself failing in applying DBT skills or staying in wise mind, it’s okay! Instead of being overly self-critical, try to reframe the situation by focusing on what you’ve learned from the experience.

At the Center for Wise Mind Living, we believe real change happens when logic and emotion work together. Rooted in the concept of “Wise Mind” from Dialectical Behavior Therapy, it’s about finding that grounded, centered place inside you where clarity meets compassion, and intention guides action. Wise Mind Living means living thoughtfully, responding instead of reacting, and building a life that feels both meaningful and balanced.

Opposite Action is a powerful skill from Dialectical Behavior Therapy that helps you change how you feel by changing what you do. When your emotion isn’t serving you or doesn’t actually fit the facts of the situation, instead of following the urge your emotion is pushing for (avoid, shut down, lash out), try to gently do the opposite. Approach instead of avoid. Speak instead of staying silent. Engage instead of withdraw. Actions lead to emotions…change the behavior and the feeling will catch up!
