Your parent isn’t being difficult — they may simply be trying to protect their independence and sense of control.
When they say, “I don’t need help,” they may be expressing concern about losing the lifestyle and routines they value.
Instead of focusing on everything they’re struggling with, try asking what would make daily life easier and more comfortable. Begin with small, practical forms of support, offer meaningful choices, and involve them in every decision.
Present home care as a way to preserve independence, maintain familiar routines, and continue living safely at home — not as a sign that they can no longer manage on their own.
With patience, respect, and the right approach, the conversation can become more positive and productive.
The goal isn’t to take away independence — it’s to help protect it.
