Cholesterol travels through your blood, and when levels increase, your risk of heart disease and stroke can go up. Many people don’t have symptoms, so knowing your numbers is key.

A standard cholesterol screening is recommended for children ages 9-11, and adults should be screened again at age 19 and every 5 years after. The blood test, also called a lipid panel, measures total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides.

Based on your health and risk factors, your healthcare team might recommend more advanced cholesterol screening. New guidance recommends every adult get tested for lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), at least once in their lifetime. Testing for Apolipoprotein B or ApoB gives a clearer picture of heart disease risk for people with other health conditions. Men 40 and older and women 45 and older can be considered for a coronary artery scan to check the artery walls for early plaque buildup.

Ask about your cholesterol at your next appointment. Your doctor can help you understand whether advanced cholesterol screening is right for you.

In September 2024, less than two weeks before I was set to run what would have been my sixth marathon, I had an NSTEMI. A year and a half and many tests and procedures later, we now know that the NSTEMI was caused by coronary artery vasospasm. With the help of an intrepid cardiologist who was determined to figure out why an otherwise healthy 42-year-old mom of four had a heart attack, we now have a treatment plan that includes a combination of medications and cardiac rehab. My family has been devastated by cardiac-related tragedies before, and I’m so grateful that the American Heart Association are helping me ensure that won’t happen to me too.

I chose the American Heart Association for the New York City Marathon because heart health is something that affects so many people and families. Running the marathon gives me a chance to challenge myself while also supporting a cause that makes a real difference. I like that the American Heart Association focuses on helping people live healthier lives through research, education, and awareness. Being able to raise money and support their mission makes the experience even more meaningful. I'm excited to run for a cause that's bigger than just crossing the finish line.

petal season ꕤ is for learning how to save a life ♡

When a heart stops, someone nearby ready to help can make all the difference. Hands-Only CPR has two simple steps:

If you see a teen or adult collapse, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of “Kiss Me” by Ariana Grande.

It’s truly an honor to not only run the New York City Marathon, but to do it for a cause that means so much to me personally. In 2023, I was diagnosed with an arrhythmia that completely changed my life. It affected my ability to run, my quality of life, and would have eventually led to heart failure. After three failed ablations, I was fortunate enough to have an innovative procedure at the Mayo Clinic that gave me my life back. It’s because of research, funding, and advancements in cardiac care, like those supported by the American Heart Association, I’m able to stand on the start line of the NYC Marathon in November. I run now because I can, and every mile is a thank you to the people who made that possible and a way to help raise funds for the next person who needs their own second chance.

When I was 17, I collapsed during my first half-marathon and was diagnosed with an extremely rare congenital heart defect. During months of testing and appointments, I spent time in the pediatric cardiology unit where I saw children and families facing challenges far greater than my own. That experience changed my perspective and inspired me to use my ability to run to help support lifesaving heart research, care, and resources for families affected by heart-related struggles. This November, I will be running the NYC Marathon for those who can't, so one day they can.castelli.75
