Dr. Emma Guttman shared a perspective on a recent study that explored the link between GLP-1 therapy and hair loss in patients with type 2 diabetes.
“This study reinforces the need to involve dermatologists before or early in the treatment of patients prescribed GLP-1 receptor agonists for type 2 diabetes or other conditions, as hair loss remains a major patient concern while on treatment.” Details: https://bit.ly/4fLroxE

A recent retrospective study evaluated nemolizumab as a treatment for dermatomyositis. 🧬

Dermatomyositis is an autoimmune disease that affects the skin and muscles, and for many patients, one of the most challenging symptoms is persistent itch. Researchers at Mount Sinai, led by Dr. Saakshi Khattri, evaluated nemolizumab, an IL-31 inhibitor, in a small retrospective case series.

In this series, 5 patients with moderate-to-severe itch from dermatomyositis were treated with nemolizumab and followed over several months. The findings:

• Patients had a reduction in itch, anecdotally in as little as 2 days

• The series included patients with longstanding disease and patients who had not responded to previous treatments

• No serious adverse effects were reported

Further study into IL-31 inhibitors for itch relief in patients with dermatomyositis is needed.
