Excellent company and great conversation from extraordinary scholars during the UMass Alumini event on Martha’s Vineyard. Vineyard Vibes gave us an opportunity to learn from our faculty and guests about the power of documenting our history, leadership and collective action.

Thank you to Dr. Irma McClaurin, Dr. Robin Kelley, Dr. Jamila Lyiscott, Dr. Keisha Green, Dr. Justin Cole’s & Dr. Amilcar Shabazz for creating much needed community conversations and setting the table.

Today, our FCBC family took a little “world tour” to New Jersey, and what a blessing it was!

Stop 1: Bethesda Baptist Church, led by Rev. Dr. Jonnel Green, where Minister Laverne King delivered a powerful reminder about what keeps us standing when life tries to shake us: staying rooted.

Stop 2: Metropolitan Baptist Church, led by Rev. Dr. David Jefferson, where our very own Pastor Michael A. Walrond, Jr. challenged us with a message I’ll be reflecting on all week: “Don’t waste your wilderness.”
Sometimes the wilderness isn’t punishment, it’s preparation. It’s where faith is strengthened, purpose is revealed, and resilience is built.

Today was a good reminder about why community is necessary. It was about worshiping together, praying together, celebrating together, and leaving stronger than we arrived.

Grateful for every sermon, every prayer, every embrace, and every reminder that God is still moving. What message are you taking into this new week?

Fifty years ago, someone in our family said, “let’s gather” and we never stopped. This year, the Gordon Family Reunion turned 50 with a half a century of family reunions, first steps, last goodbyes, and everything in between. Five decades of cookouts and cousins, elders and babies, stories passed down like heirlooms. We built something; a name, a table and a legacy that keeps growing branches with 50 years of showing up for each other.

With 400 plus Gordon’s registered this year I am reminded of just how much generational love there is. We are the sum of everyone who came before us, the ones who prayed us through and the ones who helped us see it through.
