Dr. Meryl Kahan, MD, FACOG, MSCP, FAAOPM The mission of SheMD is to deliver outstanding concierge gynecology, hormonal wellness, and medical aesthetics services to the women of New York City and surrounding areas. Kahan, MD, FACOG, MSCP, launched SheMD in 2023

with the goal of providing women with compassionate and comprehensive care. Though Dr. Kahan enjoys working with patients of all ages, starting from adolescence, one common theme she noticed throughout her years in practice was the unmet needs of women in perimenopause and beyond. As a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP), she has a special interest in menopause care, hormone therapy and management, and sexual dysfunction. She also appreciates that for many patients, how one feels about their looks can have a significant impact on wellness. Therefore, at SheMD, patients can also conveniently address their aesthetic goals with Dr. Kahan, who is board-certified in medical aesthetics and offers a wide range of aesthetic treatments. Patient-centered care is a hallmark of SheMD, and those who entrust Dr. Kahan with their care appreciate the time she takes to get to know her patients as distinct individuals. These connections enable Dr. Kahan to create a custom-tailored approach for each set of needs. Wellness exams are the starting point for women’s health care. These visits offer women the chance to get Pap smears and other screenings. They also receive information on how to enhance their overall health and wellness. Women have access to the latest contraception options, menopause care, hormone therapy, and much more. Services span all the needs a woman encounters from adolescence through adulthood, menopause, and beyond. The practice also provides medical aesthetics options that include Botox® and dermal fillers. The best way to learn more about all that SheMD has to offer is to book a time for a complimentary virtual "meet & greet" with Dr. Kahan.

Thought it was just allergies?

If your spring symptoms go beyond congestion and start affecting your skin, digestion, mood, or cycle… there may be more going on.

I break down the connection between hormones, histamine, and why your body feels more reactive this time of year.

From low lows to high highs, estrogen levels are like a rollercoaster in perimenopause. They can vary literally from day to day, just like the weather! This explains the wild fluctuations in symptoms including mood seen during this midlife stage. Sometimes, low dose estrogen replacement can be super helpful to keep levels a bit more stable.

April is Adenomyosis Awareness Month.
Heavy, painful periods in your 40s aren't always "just hormones." There's a condition affecting up to 1 in 3 women that gets missed constantly — and perimenopause is often used to explain it away.
Swipe through to learn the difference. Save this for someone who needs it.
And if you want a deeper dive, I just published a full blog post breaking down everything — symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and why the evaluation matters.

New does not always mean completely different. Sometimes it means the language finally catches up to the clinical reality. That's why I firmly believe in the art of medicine rather than following straight cookie cutter guidelines (of course while still following evidence).

But for those who do not ever deviate, this new guidance is super helpful, as it should certainly decrease the number of years (years!) needed to diagnose someone with endometriosis. And that can have a major impact on health, quality of life, fertility, etc.

Endometriosis Awareness Month is midway through. Notoriously difficult to officially diagnose, ACOG has made new recommendations regarding diagnosis of endometriosis. Specifically that surgery is no longer needed and that symptoms alone can be used. This can hasten treatment options and alter the course of the disease. While I have long been treating based on a presumed diagnosis (i.e. not requiring surgery to treat), not everyone has been. So this is certainly a useful guideline and long overdue.

This comment really irks me (yes, I am a medical doctor). It was in response to someone inquiring where to get an evaluation and management for her menopause symptoms. I’m not sure how it makes sense to say it makes no sense to see “a MD” when a healthcare provider can help. Many healthcare “providers” actually are not trained to know a) what labs to order, b) how to interpret said labs, and c) how to manage any abnormalities. Furthermore, many who are “menopause experts” are not licensed to be able to provide medical care at all, let alone prescribe medication. So I respectfully disagree, it actually does make sense to see a medical doctor.
Side note- insurance does not cover functional medicine, it hardly even covers traditional medicine these days, so that’s wrong too.

RT3 (Reverse T3) is a survival response. It’s what your body makes when it’s trying to conserve rather than create energy.

It can be triggered by chronic stress, calorie restriction, inflammation, overtraining, or certain medications.

And it can interfere with your active thyroid hormone doing its job.

So yes—at first glance, your labs might be normal.
But your metabolism is still stuck in neutral.

This is why a complete thyroid panel paired with personalized interpretation matters:
✅ TSH
✅ Free T3 and Free T4
✅ Reverse T3 (RT3)
✅ Thyroid antibodies
✅ T3/RT3 ratio

Understanding the complete picture—not just whether you're "in range"—can make a significant difference.
