Understanding your breast reconstruction options can be part of your breast cancer care, even if you ultimately choose not to have reconstruction.

So, when should you meet with a reconstructive surgeon after a breast cancer diagnosis?

Breast reconstruction after cancer is about more than appearance. For many women, it is about identity, self-image, and feeling comfortable in their bodies.

Treating breast cancer is the priority. Reconstruction is not required for survival, and not every woman will want it. But that does not make it any less meaningful for someone who does.

For some women, losing a breast can feel like losing a part of themselves. Their breasts may be closely connected to how they see themselves and how they move through the world. Restoring them can be an important part of their recovery.

This is why I view breast reconstruction as medically necessary for patients who want it. It addresses a loss that can have a profound personal impact.

The decision should center on what matters to you. You do not have to justify wanting reconstruction, and you do not have to choose it to meet someone else’s expectations.

Whether you choose reconstruction or decide to go flat, your priorities deserve to be heard and respected. My role is to help you understand your options and make a decision that feels right for you.

What do you wish more people understood about breast reconstruction?

A lumpectomy, also called a partial mastectomy, removes the cancer and a margin of surrounding breast tissue while keeping the rest of the breast.

Does it require reconstruction? Not always.

Drains play an important role after a mastectomy. They remove fluid that collects where breast tissue was removed, helping prevent a buildup as your body heals.

Why is Breast Cancer Awareness Month so important?

We talk about breast cancer year-round and hear stories every day about the women it affects. October gives us another opportunity to highlight every part of the breast cancer journey, from diagnosis and treatment to recovery and life beyond cancer.

As a breast reconstructive surgeon, I’m grateful to be part of that care. I get to help restore something that cancer has taken away. For women who choose reconstruction, that can be a deeply meaningful part of their recovery. Being trusted with that role is one of the most rewarding parts of my practice.

This month is also a reminder to make time for your own health. Keep up with your doctor’s appointments, discuss the breast screening schedule that’s right for you, and bring up any changes or concerns.

When you spend so much time caring for others, it can be easy to put yourself last. Your health deserves attention, too.

Breast surgeon and breast reconstructive surgeon are two terms that are often confused, but each specialist plays a different role in breast cancer care.

A breast surgeon focuses on treating the cancer. They perform procedures such as lumpectomies, lymph node surgery, and mastectomies.

A breast reconstructive surgeon is a plastic surgeon who focuses on restoring the breast after cancer surgery. We work closely with the breast surgeon to coordinate a treatment and reconstruction plan based on each patient’s diagnosis, anatomy, and goals.

Did you know the difference between these two specialists?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an important reminder to prioritize your health. Schedule your screenings, keep up with regular exams, listen to your body, and encourage the women you love to do the same.

Breast reconstruction can be an empowering part of the healing process for patients with breast cancer. For many women, it helps restore confidence, a sense of wholeness, and the freedom to feel like themselves again. The choice is deeply personal, and what matters most is what feels right for you.

What is the gold standard for breast reconstruction?

The truth is, I don’t believe there is one type of reconstruction that is best for every patient.

For many healthy patients, using their own abdominal tissue for DIEP flap reconstruction may be an excellent option. But it is not right for everyone. Some patients may not be candidates for a longer surgery, while others may not have enough tissue to achieve their desired breast size. In those cases, implant reconstruction may be the better choice.

I know “it depends” can feel like an unsatisfying answer, but breast reconstruction is highly personal. Your health, anatomy, lifestyle, treatment plan, and goals all matter.

The best reconstruction is not one specific procedure. It is the option that makes the most sense for you.
