A gaggle of gals, making me laugh until my stomach hurt, bopping around the island singing along to the great pop princesses of yore, trudging up that godforsaken hill in our wet bikinis during the hottest part of the day praying for a hitchhike, taking turns leading a yoga flow next to that monastery on the hill, enduring the slight waterboarding that was zooming home on that speedboat, trading meds when the insomnia or travel-related illnesses hit, talking about boys and careers and childhood and kids, splitting our meals and house wine each night and wondering why every country doesn’t also offer free dessert, finding my artistic medium in pastels, all the while writing in my head as we asked each other questions each day like: “What makes you the most jealous?” and “How would you least like to die?”
Agreeing in unison that, if given the choice, we’d choose to be women every single time. A reminder, yet again, of what precious gems female friendships can be.

It’s rare that I get to be the older sister in a group, but I loved the opportunity to show one way your mid-30s can look when you choose yourself, go wherever the wind takes you, and take the biggest bite out of life.

Yes, my prom night tormentors now work in mental health.

Yes, I understand why.

Because I’ve been a harm-doer too: unhealed, over-promoted, and surviving systems that reward burn out and self abandonment.

This is the story of leaving those systems, rebuilding my leadership on my own terms, and finding the courage to stop pouring from an empty cup.

New on substack, a personal poem: Grief and her cousin Joy

This one’s for the people who laugh in hospital hallways, find punchlines at funerals and pass the time in psych wards with levity and grace.

I grew up interloping in the kinds of places no one brags about: nursing homes, ICUs, shelters, jail. And somehow—always—there was laughter.

This is a love letter to that kind of laughter. The inappropriate, irreverent kind that keeps you tethered to life when everything feels like it’s slipping.

We talk a lot about grief. We don’t talk enough about the joy, humanity and beauty that sneaks in beside it.
