What happens when people feel they can't speak honestly about experiences they believe are unfair?

In my latest Op-Ed for The Daily Wire, I share why self-censorship can carry significant psychological costs—not only for individuals, but also for workplace culture and relationships.

As a psychologist, I've seen how suppressing frustration, disappointment, or concerns about fairness can contribute to anxiety, resentment, and disconnection. Healthy workplaces depend on trust, authenticity, and the ability to discuss difficult issues openly and respectfully.

Free speech isn't just a constitutional issue. It's a mental health issue.

I was glad to contribute to this thoughtful Scary Mommy article by Sarah Michelle Sherman about the growing trend of “why-cations” — trips people take to reflect during times of transition.

One of the ideas we discussed is that people are often carrying an enormous amount of “cognitive load” while trying to process emotional changes and still manage everyday responsibilities. Sometimes we expect a breakthrough moment, but growth doesn’t always happen on command.

As I shared in the article, even experiences that don’t produce an immediate “click” can still be incredibly valuable because they help us learn more about ourselves and what we may need next.

Thank you again to Scary Mommy for including my perspective.

I joined Ryan Rogers on the Reality Therapy Podcast, and we tackled a tough issue:

How do we balance rights and responsibilities in mental health care? ⚖️

In my clinical experience, I’ve seen individuals commit serious harm, stabilize briefly, and then be released—because holding them longer would “violate their rights.”

At the same time, they can refuse treatment… also as a matter of “rights.”

That creates a gap that’s hard to ignore.

Without a connection between rights and responsibilities, the system risks becoming less compassionate—not more.

If this topic resonates, I explore it more deeply here:

I had such a fun conversation with Griff Jenkins on Fox & Friends Wellness Series about float tanks, stress reduction, and why giving your brain a true “reset” matters so much 🧠✨

One thing I love about float therapy is that it creates a rare opportunity to completely unplug — no notifications, no scrolling, no constant stimulation. Research even suggests cortisol levels can drop while the brain shifts into deeply relaxed theta wave states.

I also loved hearing Griff describe the random memories and thoughts that surfaced during the experience — that actually happens a lot, which is why I often recommend bringing a notebook afterward instead of immediately jumping back onto your phone 📓

Grateful to Fox News for the chance to discuss my new book:

I had a great conversation with Eric Rozenberg on The Business of Meetings Podcast (Event Business Formula) about a topic that often gets overlooked:

The “secondary gains” of victimhood in the workplace.

Sometimes, when someone is labeled as a victim, they may (often unintentionally) receive benefits—like special accommodations or social protection. Over time, this can create an incentive structure that reinforces conflict and shuts down open dialogue.

Real bullying should always be addressed. Going too far in trying to eliminate harm can accidentally create a different problem: a culture where people feel silenced or afraid to speak honestly.

That’s not healthy—for individuals or teams.

Thank you to Eric for the thoughtful discussion—I’m truly honored to be included.

Have you ever felt like you had to filter yourself just to avoid being judged or misunderstood?

I had a great conversation on the Meaningful Happiness Podcast with Dr. Scott Conkright about what I call “cancel culture anxiety”—and how holding things in can actually take a toll on your mental health.

Anxiety can serve a purpose. It helps us prepare. When it starts silencing us or making us second-guess everything we say, it can backfire in a big way.

Real connection comes from being able to be honest—even when we don’t fully agree.

Thank you to Dr. Scott Conkright for such a thoughtful discussion. I’m truly honored to share these ideas.

What if the fastest way to be heard… is to prove you can listen?

In my recent conversation on Brain in a Vat with Mark Oppenheimer and Dr. Jason Werbeloff, I shared a simple technique that can completely change the tone of a conversation:

Listen carefully, reflect the other person’s viewpoint back to them, and ask if you got it right. Only then move into sharing your own perspective.

This approach builds trust quickly—and it makes people far more open to hearing you in return.

I’m truly grateful to Mark and Jason for including me in such a thoughtful discussion. It’s always meaningful to see how these tools resonate beyond the therapy room.

I joined Ryan Rogers on the Reality Therapy Podcast to talk about something I feel strongly about: the connection between free speech and mental health.

There’s a growing tendency to try to protect people by limiting what can be said—whether that’s in schools, workplaces, or social settings. While the intention may be kindness, the result is often the opposite.

When people don’t have the chance to engage with different perspectives, they miss the opportunity to build resilience, understanding, and real connection.

I’m grateful to Ryan Rogers for the thoughtful conversation, as well as the chance to share ideas from my book.
