Using a real-life case scenario, we explored the choices families face as needs change, from when to bring in an Aging Life Care Manager to understanding the options and costs of hiring help at home, making the home safer, and recognizing when senior living might be the better choice.

The takeaway? There is no one “right” answer. Aging well is about understanding your options, planning ahead, and having trusted professionals around the table when you need them.

𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 & 𝐀𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠

Sometimes good healthcare isn’t about adding another medication, it’s about taking a closer look at the ones we already have.

This KFF Health News article highlights three commonly used medications older adults may be getting more of than they need: 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐳𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧.

One finding that caught my attention: benzodiazepine use actually 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐳𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧.

And despite newer guidance, antibiotics were still prescribed at 𝟗𝟕% 𝐨𝐟 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 in one large VA study.

As a gerontology nurse practitioner, I’ve seen how medications can accumulate over the years. What made sense at 65 may deserve another look at 75 or 85.

The message isn’t to stop medications on your own. It’s to periodically ask your healthcare provider: “𝐃𝐨 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤?”
