When emotions are running high, it can be hard not to get pulled into the intensity of the moment.

But a child who is already overwhelmed doesn't need us to match their energy. They need us to help bring the temperature down as much as we possibly can.

That might mean:
taking a deep breath
lowering your voice
slowing your movements
giving a little more space
or simply reminding yourself: I don't have to solve this right now.

You don't have to be perfectly calm. You're human, too.

But the more regulated we can stay, the more we can help create a sense of safety for our child.

Sometimes, calm is the first support we give.

Big emotions can be challenging—for parents and for children.

But in those moments, connection matters first. When we respond with connection first, we help children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

A calm adult can help create a calm environment. And a calm environment is a place where a child can feel safe enough to regulate, grow, and learn new skills.

Small moments of connection build skills that last. 💛

Parents often feel like they're constantly correcting their child—but sometimes all those corrections become background noise.

One simple strategy is to pause before responding and ask yourself:

"What do I want my child to do instead?"

Giving a clear, positive direction is often much easier for children to understand than hearing what they're doing wrong.

Small changes in the way we communicate can lead to calmer moments for everyone.

Parents often tell us that summer can be both exciting and exhausting.

Hot weather, bright sunlight, crowded parks, and changes in routine can all increase sensory demands for autistic children.

A little planning—and a lot of flexibility—can help everyone enjoy summer a little more.

Every child is different, so find the supports that work best for your family. 💙

A child’s “no” is often more than just a refusal — it’s communication.

Taking a moment to understand what’s behind a behavior can help us respond with compassion and support our children in developing new skills.

At Helping Hands ABA, we believe every behavior has a reason, and every child deserves to be understood. 💙

When you’re raising a child with additional support needs, it’s easy to second-guess what you’re seeing—especially when behaviors feel inconsistent or confusing.

But many of the things parents worry about are actually very normal parts of development and skill-building.

At Helping Hands ABA, we focus on helping families understand behavior through a lens of support, not blame—so you can feel more confident, grounded, and less alone in the process.

Power struggles often happen when a child feels like they have no control in the moment.

A simple tool you can try today is offering an either/or instead of a yes/no proposition.

Instead of:
“Put on your shoes.”

Try:
“Do you want your red shoes or your blue shoes?”

This small shift:
• reduces resistance
• increases cooperation
• helps your child feel capable and involved

It doesn’t mean giving in—it means giving structure with dignity.
