The Weill Cornell Medicine Brain and Spine Center is a world-class provider of minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of the full spectrum of neurological disease. Our own Dr. Ning Lin, neurosurgeon at Weill Cornell Medicine and president of the Chinese American Medical Society (CAMS), joined Senator John Liu at a recent press conference calling on Governor Hochul to sign the “Screen at 23” bill into law.

Co-sponsored by CAMS and recently passed by the New York State Senate, the bill would require insurers to cover diabetes screening for patients with a BMI of 23 or higher, down from the previous threshold of 25. The change matters most for Asian American communities, who face a higher diabetes risk at lower BMIs.

Training the next generation of spine surgeons.

Applications are open for the Weill Cornell–Och Spine Clinical Fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Complex Spinal Surgery. Offered in collaboration with NewYork-Presbyterian, the one-year fellowship gives fellows hands-on training in minimally invasive surgery, navigation and complex spine across degenerative, deformity, trauma and tumor cases.

Fellows train alongside Dr. Roger Härtl, Och Spine Co-Director, and Dr. Ibrahim Hussain, Spine Fellowship Director, in a multidisciplinary setting at Och Spine at The Spiral, with dedicated time for research and publication. Questions? Contact Dr. Härtl at [email protected].

Our AANS student chapter has been going strong for years, and recently we hosted our first official AANS Women in Neurosurgery (WINS) Section event.

Over dinner, students connected with Dr. Caitlin Hoffman, Dr. Justiss Kallos, craniofacial fellow Megan Still, resident Kate Rosen and chief resident Natasha Kharas, who shared candid advice about training, career paths and finding community in the field. The conversation was so engaging that we only paused for a few photos, a sign of a great night.

We're proud to share that Dr. Gabriella Tosto-D'Antonio, DNP, Chief Nurse Practitioner for Weill Cornell Medicine Neurosurgery, has been named WCM's Nurse Practitioner of the Year! 🎉

Dr. Tosto-D'Antonio brings a whole-person approach to neurosurgical care. She partners with patients and families as active members of the care team and guides them through the long road to recovery. She has also strengthened the team around her by improving onboarding and mentorship for advanced practice providers and nurses, enhancing team communication and leading data-driven quality initiatives.

"This recognition is a reflection of the people who have supported, mentored and inspired me throughout my career," she says.

We’re continuing our celebration of with Taylor Sekyra, PA-C — one of the newest additions to our neurological surgery team at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell! 🧠

Taylor provides dedicated care for our neurosurgery inpatients, bringing a background as unique as her path to medicine. Before earning her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Albany Medical College, she was a Division I women's soccer student-athlete at the University of Washington, where she also interned with The Sports Institute researching concussion prevention. After graduating, she played professional soccer in Iceland before returning to healthcare through orthopedic trauma work.

From the field to the bedside, Taylor brings the same drive, teamwork and care to every patient and family she works with.

Dr. Caitlin Hoffman performed the first-ever functional hemispherotomy in Tanzania — a complex surgery to stop intractable seizures — on a four-year-old boy who had been living with uncontrolled epilepsy.

The surgery was a success, and today that little boy is seizure-free.
