Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, foggy or unusually fatigued when you stand? It may be more than “just standing up too quickly.”

With Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), blood may pool in the lower body when a person stands. Less blood returns to the heart and brain, and the heart rate rises as the body tries to maintain blood flow.

In adults, one diagnostic criterion is a heart-rate increase of at least 30 beats per minute within 10 minutes of standing. However, POTS cannot be diagnosed by heart rate alone and requires a professional medical evaluation.
