AP spotlighted Britt Apgar’s path to the Women's Pro Baseball League and her collaboration with HSS prosthetics expert Chrysta Irolla, MS, MSPO, CPO, to develop a custom prosthetic that supports her game at the highest level.

Apgar has no feeling in her nub. During one visit with Irolla, she tried on a prosthetic that mimicked the sensation of touch.

“It was the first time that I had held a bat and it felt like I was holding it with two hands. So I started tearing up,” Apgar said. “It was such a mind-blowing feeling.”

The HSS Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy (PDAA) was back in Long Beach, NY with Skudin Surf for a day of adaptive surfing, where every wave brought new confidence, connection, and joy.

From cheering on the shoreline to celebrating first rides, our young athletes and their families came together for an experience that showcased what’s possible when accessibility, community, and determination come together.

Moments like these help PDAA participants discover new passions, strengthen important skills, reinforce therapy goals, and create memories that last far beyond the summer.

“These high-functioning players are very valuable, so you want to watch them, you want to preserve them, you want to give them feedback on a day-to-day basis with regard to how can we best preserve their ability,” Dr. Williams shares.
