This Saturday, June 13, Dr. Mark Souweidane and his lab team will lace up for the Cristian Rivera Foundation 5K Walk/Run in support of DIPG research—and you're invited to join them.

The Cristian Rivera Foundation was founded in 2009 by John Rivera in memory of his son, Cristian, a patient of Dr. Souweidane's who lost his life to Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a universally fatal pediatric brain tumor. Today the Foundation is the largest philanthropic supporter of DIPG research at our Children's Brain Tumor Project, making advances against this devastating disease possible.

Walk or run alongside our team and a passionate community committed to creating a world without DIPG. Every step and every dollar moves research forward.

Register at the link below, select Children's Brain Tumor Project from the dropdown, and complete the form. Can't make it? You can still support the cause through the donation link.

Together, we can make a difference for children and families facing DIPG. 💜

Emma is an eleven‑year‑old who loves Lego builds, baking and making people smile. A year ago, her family feared they would never see that joyful version of her again.

Her seizures began suddenly, freezing at school, then episodes in her sleep.

Soon she was seizing almost daily. She grew anxious, stopped doing the activities she loved and began to lose confidence.

Searching for answers, Emma’s family came to NewYork‑Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine, where they pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Caitlin Hoffman.

After careful planning, she underwent a selective resection to remove the seizure focus. Hearing the words “brain surgery” was overwhelming for her parents, but Dr. Hoffman's clarity and compassion made all the difference.

When Emma woke up from surgery alert and talking, her family felt the first spark of hope. Days later, her personality began to return. “Her attitude went back to what it was before the seizures,” her dad says. “We got our daughter back.”

Today, five months seizure free, Emma is thriving. She swims again, ziplines with friends and laughs without fear. “I wasn’t scared anymore,” she says. “I could finally do things again.”

Her family’s message to others facing pediatric epilepsy: Don’t give up. The right team can change everything.
