Need a distraction from the news? Here's something to make you look up from your devices.
NEW YORK, August 12, 2026 —
New York will be in the path of a partial solar eclipse today with about 10% of the sun being covered by the moon just before 2pm. Remember that no solar eclipse is safe to view with the naked eyes or regular sunglasses.
View the directly eclipse only through special eclipse glasses or indirectly through a pinhole device. https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/14391/
Have no time during the day? The best meteor shower of the year happens tonight. A new moon promises excellent viewing conditions for the Perseids Meteor Shower starting at 11pm and into the pre-dawn hours. During its peak, observers under clear, dark skies can spot roughly 50 to 100 meteors per hour. Unlike the eclipse, this event is best viewed with your naked eyes in an open area away from city lights. Just give your eyes 20 minutes to dark adapt without looking at your phone or other electronic devices, sit back, and enjoy the show!
