In case you missed it, Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) has officially been renamed to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), which better reflects its complexity and symptoms. But even with a new name, there are still a lot of myths surrounding this common disorder that affects about 1 in 8 women of reproductive age worldwide.

As PMOS Awareness Month wraps up, let's clear up some common misconceptions about this condition and how it relates to your fertility health. >>>

Will losing weight improve your fertility if you have PMOS?

For women with PMOS, formerly known as PCOS, being overweight can affect insulin resistance, which can interfere with ovulation. Dr. Laurence Jacobs of CCRM Fertility & Gynecologic Surgeons of Illinois says, yes, losing weight *can* improve your chances of getting pregnant.

However, Dr. Jacobs notes that you may not have to lose as much weight as you think...

Watch the video for an explainer on the correlation between weight, PMOS, and fertility, plus how GLP-1 medications come into play.

Remember though: You don't need to hit a certain number on the scale before starting fertility treatment. The ultimate goal in losing weight is to improve metabolic health and ovarian function to maximize your chances of a healthy pregnancy.

IVF isn’t the only fertility treatment that can lead to a baby. For Michelle G., a patient at CCRM Fertility of NoVA, it was her fifth round of intrauterine insemination (IUI) that helped her grow her family.

Before coming to CCRM Fertility of NoVA, Michelle had completed four unsuccessful IUI cycles and trigger shots at another fertility clinic. After nearly nine years of infertility, she became pregnant during her fifth IUI cycle. Her daughter, Vanessa, was born just after Christmas in 2025.

“CCRM took great care of us and I’m so grateful and happy,” she says.

When should you see a fertility specialist? You don’t always have to wait.

The general recommendation is 12 months of trying to conceive if you’re under 35, or 6 months if you’re 35 or older. But if you have questions or concerns about your fertility, it’s never too soon to start the conversation.

This is especially important if you’re living with a condition like PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome), which can affect reproductive health. In this reel, Dr. Creighton Likes, Medical Director at CCRM Fertility of Greenville, shares when it may make sense to see a fertility specialist and why being proactive can help you better understand your reproductive health and options.

Not all supplements are created equal, but when you're trying to conceive, a healthy diet along with prenatal vitamins can help ensure you’re getting important nutrients, including folic acid.

Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B that helps with cell growth and heart health. Folic Acid Awareness Week, happening now until Sept. 19, helps educate on the important role folic acid plays in preventing neural tube defects.

Folate is also found in some foods such as green vegetables and legumes, but we usually don't get enough from diet alone, especially when trying to conceive or are pregnant, which is why it's important to supplement.

Dr. James Nodler, Medical Director at CCRM Fertility of Seattle, explains the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables for fertility and why folic acid, along with other key vitamins, plays an important role in reproductive health.

What supplements did you take/are you taking on your fertility journey?

Dana W. and her husband, Scott, expected to start their family not long after saying "I do,” but months turned into years of waiting and hoping for their chance to become parents.

Throughout that time, Dana struggled with irregular periods, sometimes going months without a cycle, yet still lacked answers about why she wasn't getting pregnant.

Fertility treatment brought more heartbreak. After three unsuccessful egg retrievals at her former clinic, including one that produced 23 eggs but no blastocysts, Dana was told donor eggs were likely her best path to parenthood.

Moving directly to donor eggs didn’t feel right, and that’s when Dana and her husband, Scott, met with Dr. Sara Barton at CCRM Fertility of Colorado in Denver for a second opinion. After thorough testing, Dr. Barton diagnosed Dana with Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (formerly known as PCOS) and came up with a fresh new protocol for her next cycle of IVF.

“Our experience at CCRM felt different. The testing was thorough, the protocol was individualized, and the staff made us feel confident that every detail mattered,” Dana says.

The couple got five healthy embryos from that cycle, two of which became their daughters, Rhodes and Reeves.

"Our girls are the family we spent years praying for and the most beautiful reminder of what science, faith, persistence, and an incredible medical team can make possible,” says Dana.
