Seasonal Tip: Watch out for dried fruit -- they stick to your teeth!

Dried fruit is not the same for your teeth as fresh fruit. Dried fruits such as raisins, prunes, and apricots stick to your teeth, which causes a breeding ground for bacteria, increasing the chance of enamel erosion. If you do decide to snack on dried fruits, try to mix them with nuts (think: trail mix), which can help scrape dried fruit residue off your teeth. http://lilpearlsdental.com/pearls-wisdom/

Did you know...

It's not so much the amount of sugar you eat that is harmful to your teeth, but HOW OFTEN. Every time we eat or drink, the pH in our mouth becomes more acidic - giving cavity-causing bacteria an opportunity to thrive.

So, SNACK SMARTER - limit the number of times you and your children snack during the day - - allowing the pH in your mouth to normalize and recover between eating/drinking periods.

We all know the importance of staying hydrated in this hot summer weather. But did you know that drinking tap water especially will also help your teeth?

Unlike most bottled waters, tap water from public systems usually contains fluoride, a key mineral that can help strengthen the enamel in your teeth. In fact, putting fluoride in the community water supply is “the single most effective public health measure to prevent dental decay,” according to the ADA. Plus, drinking water can help rinse away the cavity-causing bacteria from food that might be lingering on your teeth.

So if you splurge on summer treats, follow with a ~*~swish~*~ of water to rinse away an lingering sugars in the mouth.

Even after trying your best to prevent tooth decay, sometimes the dentist finds a little cavity or two. It may be tempting to put off tooth decay treatment when you're not feeling any pain, but procrastination comes with a price: Tooth decay doesn't repair itself, and what starts out as a minor problem can quickly become serious, changing your treatment options dramatically.

The longer that you put off tooth decay treatment, the more involved, expensive and painful that treatment could become.
