Fishing stocks in many parts of the world are heavily affected by overfishing, figures by the FAO show. The reasons for this include illegal fishing, which is most prevalent in the Western Central Pacific around the South China Sea as well as in the Eastern Central Atlantic close to West Africa.

But the data also shows that large-scale industrial fleets and a big demand for fish are on their own already major factors in decimating fishing stocks. This is the case in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea as well as the Southeast Pacific off the coast of South America. Illegal fishing also plays a part here, but is less widespread.

The FAO in its latest fisheries report writes that the share of unsustainably fished stocks worldwide increased to 37.7 percent (unweighted) in 2021, up from 35.4 percent in 2019 and 10 percent in 1974. This is despite the fact that UN developmental goals are currently aiming to decrease overfishing and that its prevalence will eventually hurt those currently earning money off fisheries. Weighted for prevalence of type of fish and catch, the latest share of global overfished stocks was 23.1 percent.

All the aforementioned regions are seeing around 50 percent to 65 percent of their fishing stocks extracted at unsustainable levels. They are followed by the Southern Atlantic, the Northwest and Western Central Atlantic around the Canadian Coast and the Caribbean, respectively, as well as the Western Indian Ocean. In these locales, around 40 percent of stocks are fished at an unsustainable level.

Statista’s Consumer Insights survey has been tracking which issues adults in the United States consider to be the most important in the country right now, and how they have shifted over time. The following chart provides just a snapshot of these, listing the eight most cited concerns out of a possible 20 options, in the most recent survey wave as well as in the survey wave at the start of the pandemic.

Where health and social security came first in the earlier iteration, likely in reference to Covid-19, it had dropped by eight percentage points by 2025/26. In the meantime, inflation and the cost of living has risen from third position to first position (+9 p.p). Other notable changes include a drop in the share of people citing immigration in the latest wave and an increase in the share of people picking housing (previously in rank 14 at 22 percent). Six of the eight most recent most pressing issues are social, with the sole environmental topic of climate change having dropped off the list, coming in 14th position with 23 percent of respondents picking it, following issues such as education (rank nine), corruption (rank 10) and food and water security (rank 11).

As this chart shows, poverty is now on the minds of more U.S. adults, at least more imminently, than before. Where it had previously tied in 9th position with education in 2019/20 with a 32 percent share of respondents picking it as one the most important issues facing the country at that time, the share had risen to 33 percent in the latest survey wave.

Bicycle helmets are controversial. While they can undoubtedly be a great tool for the safety of cyclists, many people refuse to wear them for a multitude of reasons. Some claim that a helmet messes up their hair, others think it looks uncool, a sizeable share just think it's uncomfortable and that a helmet is difficult to transport. But there are also bigger scale arguments against mandatory helmet wearing: Studies have shown that a critical mass of bike riders and traffic participants who look after one another is the most effective way to reduce serious biking accidents on a population level. While the decision to wear a helmet when biking is always a good one on an individual level, prescribing helmet wearing to a whole population can have unintended side effects, like decreasing bike use and creating fines that disproportionately affect populations with less access to resources and information. It can also be viewed as putting the onus of safe biking on cyclists alone.

Single women without children held as much wealth on average as single men in the United States in 2022, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by Pew Research Center. In 2022, a typical unmarried woman without children had $87,200, while an unmarried man had $82,100. By contrast, the median wealth of households headed by unmarried women with kids was just $10,700.

Even among these groups, however, the pay gap emerges with age. For unmarried men aged 65 and older, the median wealth is $218,900, compared to $173,500 for unmarried women aged 65 and older without children. Households headed by married adults unsurprisingly had more wealth than households with single adults.

Over the past few years, a lot of progress has been made in accepting and understanding mental health problems. Having long been seen as a sign of weakness, mental health issues in their many varieties and severities have become much less of a taboo.

The pandemic, which left many people feel isolated, powerless or overwhelmed, accelerated that trend, as it not only caused a spike in symptoms of anxiety or depression, but also led more people to open up about their problems. In a Statista survey from 2025-2026, more than 4 in 10 U.S. adults reported that they experienced symptoms of mental health problems, such as stress, anxiety or depression in the 12 months preceding the survey, making an open discourse about mental health issues all the more important.

As our chart shows, the prevalence of self-reported mental health problems varies greatly across countries, suggesting that people in some countries, e.g. China or Japan, may be more hesitant to open up about mental health or simply less likely to identify certain problems as mental health issues.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious or depressed, please reach out to your family or friends, a mental health professional or contact a crisis line in your area. You are not alone, help is available.

According to NASA, there is “unequivocal evidence that Earth is warming at an unprecedented rate”. Data from Copernicus, the European Earth Observation program for the European Space Agency, shows that July 22, 2024, was the world’s hottest daily global average temperature since the institution’s records began in 1940 (hitting a global average of 17.16 °C/62.76 °F).

At a regional scale too, absolute temperature records are being broken around the globe. Just in the years 2022-2025, 41 countries broke or tied their all-time national heat records, some of them more than once. Japan saw its hottest day on record last August, reaching 41.8°C/107.2°F in Isesaki, in the Gunma Prefecture. Eight other countries tied or beat their heat records last year, including Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Paraguay. Some records were also set in Southeast Asia in 2024, when an exceptional heatwave hit the region. Cambodia set a new record at 42.8 °C/109.0 °F, while Laos hit a new all-time high of 43.7 °C/110.7 °F.

Meanwhile, Australia and Uruguay matched their national records in 2022, with 50.7 °C/123.3 °F in Onslow and 44.0°C/111.2 °F in Florida, respectively, as the United Kingdom saw the mercury break an all-time high in July 2022 as it passed the 40°C barrier.

Previously, during the summer of 2021 - one of the hottest on Earth -, Canada, Spain and Italy recorded peak temperatures. The Italian record, 48.8 °C/119.8 °F at Syracuse, was reported to be the highest temperature ever measured in Europe, which was certified by the WMO in 2024.

In Antarctica, a new record was hit in 2020 at the Esperanza base during the austral summer when temperatures rose to over 18 °C/64.9 °F. One year earlier, the French national record of 46 °C/114.8 °F was measured at Vérargues (Hérault), while the 2019 heatwave also saw other records broken in Europe, such as in Belgium and Germany.

According to the WMO, the world record is still officially attributed to Furnace Creek, in California’s Death Valley National Park, with 56.7 °C/134 °F reached in 1913.
