A Brooklyn legacy lives on at Downstate!

We recently celebrated renowned children’s book illustrator George Cephas Ford’s 100th birthday and dedicated the new George Cephas Ford Children’s Reading Corner in our Child Life Center. Over a remarkable five-decade career, Mr. Ford illustrated more than 130 children’s books, helping generations of children see themselves represented in the stories they read.

Learn more about this Brooklyn icon and his lasting legacy at Downstate:

One hundred years ago, when George Cephas Ford was born in Brooklyn, Black illustrators had few opportunities in children’s publishing, and Black children rarely saw themselves, their families, or their communities reflected in books. Mr. Ford helped change that.

One donor gave Downstate’s Denise John the kidney she needed nearly 20 years ago. Today, Denise is healthy, raising her family, and helping other Downstate patients through their own transplant journeys as a Staff Assistant in Transplant Services.

During National Minority Donor Awareness Month, we honor organ, eye, and tissue donors and their families, celebrate recipients like Denise, and raise awareness of the thousands still waiting for a lifesaving transplant.
