Let’s clarify something - vocal injuries are not career-ending. They are something to be taken seriously, but they are curable. That’s what laryngologists and voice-specialized SLPs are trained to do.

This common misconception that a vocal injury leads to the end of singing career is exacerbated by narratives in the media and the stigmatization surrounding vocal injuries.

Experiencing a vocal injury as a professional singer is not a reflection of talent. It is a natural risk that all singers are subject to, especially when performing at a high level. Singers are like any other athlete in this way. We wouldn’t consider an Olympian to be a “bad athlete” because they got injured in the sport. The same goes for singers.

But that’s not to say that we should let vocal injuries go. They are something to be addressed, taken seriously, and cared for. With proper management, full recovery is highly attainable.
