A teenage student discovered an incredible way to make surgical stitches reveal when a wound is becoming infected—and the surprising key ingredient was beetroot.

Her name is Dasia Taylor, and while she was still in high school in Iowa, she developed sutures that change color as an infection begins to develop. The science behind it is surprisingly straightforward. Healthy skin is naturally slightly acidic, with a pH around 5. When an infection starts, the wound becomes more alkaline, often reaching a pH close to 9. Dasia realized that if stitches could react to this change, they could provide an early visual warning.

To make it happen, she used beetroot juice, which contains natural pigments that act as a pH indicator. These pigments shift from a bright red shade to a deeper purple as the environment becomes more alkaline. By treating suture thread with the beet-based dye, she created stitches that visibly change color when the conditions suggest an infection is developing.

The innovation could have a major impact, especially in places where access to healthcare is limited. While advanced “smart” sutures already exist, they can be expensive and require specialized technology. Dasia’s approach is affordable, easy to produce, and doesn’t need any equipment to interpret—anyone can simply look at the stitches to spot a potential problem.

Her invention earned national recognition at a prestigious science competition and highlighted the power of curiosity and creative thinking. As a high school student, she tackled a real medical challenge using basic chemistry and an everyday vegetable, showing that meaningful innovation doesn’t always require a high-tech laboratory.

It’s a powerful reminder that some of the biggest breakthroughs can begin with a simple question and the determination to explore the answer.
