What does food mean to you?⁣⁣ Somewhere along the way our relationship with food took a very unhealthy turn for the worst, and especially in times like these it's easy to develop a negative 👹 relationship⁣.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Food used to be about survival - think about your current relationship with food, these days (in the developing world at least) it’s become more about indulgence, convenience, emotion, tradition, celebration etc...⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

**That’s not to say food shouldn’t be celebrated and enjoyed and in current times it's difficult I know not to use it as a comfort**⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But critically now more than ever, we need to remember that the purpose of food is to nourish and fuel our bodies.⁣⁣ It’s job as the most vital component to our overall health needs to be remembered and respected.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You know me - revealing health paradoxes are my speciality. Here's a real paradox for those of you who eat fish for its health benefits. Did you know that if you eat a regular diet of farmed fish, it can actually be pretty toxic?

Let me explain. Originally farmed fish were fed ground up small fish, loaded with Omega-3 fats, but because of cost, they are fed grains and beans, whose primary fat is Omega 6. When fish are fed an inflammatory fat diet of omega-6s instead of their natural diet of omega-3s, they accumulate higher levels of long chain Omega 6 fats and have a higher omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. So, sadly, that farm-raised fish is actually a really unhealthy thing for you to eat. Why?

The ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3’s in your diet is key. Normal ratios range should be 2-3/1 (Yes, normally there are more Omega 6s than 3s in a healthy diet) But our diet now has upwards of a 10/1 ratio due to the prevalence of vegetable oils like safflower, soy and canola and industrial-raised poultry / livestock!!

And this extremely high ratio spells trouble - it causes inflammation that eventually leads to a myriad of health issues.

And beware, organic farm raised or “sustainable” farm raised means the fish were also fed grains and soy = a high Omega 6 diet! Like I always say, you are what the fish was eating.

That's why, if you’re going to eat seafood like I do 1-2 a week, I implore you to eat wild-caught fish / seafood that are rich in Omega-3s.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an accumulation of ocean plastic between Hawaii and California. This patch is the largest of five ocean garbage patches, dense masses of plastic in the oceans’ gyres that are formed by circulating ocean currents. Exactly how much plastic is in the ocean is unknown but it is estimated at least 300 million tons, with 8 to 10 million tons added every year. 

A truckload of plastics flows into the sea each minute, floating on the surface and washing up on remote beaches or sinking into depths like the Mariana Trench, 36,000 feet deep in the ocean where a plastic bag was found. Marine life mistake microplastics for food or get tangled in plastic packaging and derelict fishing gear; and nanoplastics, the smallest plastic particles which can travel by water v***r, have been found in Antarctic ice, in rain high atop the Andes and now in human tissue – with their health effects still unknown.

I don't know how you feel but everyday stresses can make me feel ridiculously vulnerable, traumatized, and tense. It’s as if the factory forgot to install my shock absorbers, so I’ve had to come up with my own over the years.

Your daily choices and actions have a direct and measurable impact on anxiety—on the genetic, cellular, and regulatory level (homeostasis). Make the right choices, and you can restore balance, peace, and calm.

What are those daily actions?

Let's start with food. Food is at the core of all of my protocols. There are common metabolic processes in the body that exist within every cell. If you take a medicine, like a pill for anxiety, you’re targeting just one metabolic process, whereas if you make a change in the food you eat, you can influence a broad variety of systems like the brain, gut, liver, pancreas, muscle cells, blood vessels—all with one intervention.

Unfortunately, the typical American diet sets you up for chronic low-grade inflammation that often leads to anxiety.

If you struggle with anxiety, the following are foods to reduce or avoid:

🔸caffeine, as it raises cortisol and amplifies the fight-flight-freeze response, and can rob you of restful sleep if you metabolize it slowly
🔸sugar and refined carbohydrates, as they set you up for a roller coaster of anxiety-triggering blood sugar spikes. Instead, eat one square of extra dark chocolate (85 percent cacao or higher).
🔸processed and packaged foods, which are high in refined sources of inflammatory omega-6
🔸alcohol
🔸lectins, particularly wheat, rice, spelt, legumes, and soy
🔸genetically modified foods (eat organic)
🔸conventional cow milk
