Sathish Bala’s story is about being underestimated, then spending a lifetime building proof.
Tamil Canadian by way of Singapore and Vellore, Sathish is based in Ajax, Ontario, where he builds companies and communities for the diaspora.
He is the CTO and co-founder of Schoolio, a homeschool curriculum platform helping families access education differently, and the CEO of DESIFEST, Canada’s longest-running South Asian music festival, now entering its twentieth year.
But before the companies, the exits, the festival, and the memoir, there was a fourteen-year-old who had just moved to Canada and was told he was not academically capable.
There was a student rejected by twenty companies in his final co-op year.
And there was one English teacher in Scarborough who saw something the system did not.
“She read one assignment of mine and pulled me aside and said there is a spark in you, do not let anyone tell you otherwise.”
That sentence stayed with him for thirty-five years.
Today, Sathish’s work is for the kid who needs that same reminder. The diaspora kid carrying two worlds. The immigrant founder trying to break through. The next generation looking for proof that what others call impossible can still become possible.
Through Schoolio, DESIFEST, and his upcoming memoir Ballin’ Bala, he is building the kind of infrastructure he wishes existed earlier.
“The hardest part is the loneliness of being the bridge.”
