The Art of Touch: A Training That Can Transform Your Teaching
For those of us who teach yoga in person, hands-on assisting can become one of the most meaningful ways to support our students.
Teaching is not only about the words we use. It is also about observation, presence, connection and learning how to help someone experience something more clearly in their own body. Skillful touch can communicate alignment, engagement, release and support in ways that verbal cues sometimes cannot.
The Art of Touch 1, happening this Friday through Monday at ISHTA, offers a practical foundation for using hands-on adjustments safely, respectfully and confidently.
Together, we’ll explore assists for Sun Breaths and Sun Salutations, standing poses such as Warrior I and II, Triangle and lunges, as well as Child’s Pose, seated poses, basic backbends, inversions, Savasana and more. You’ll learn how to approach students in class or in a private setting with care and intention while helping them better understand their own alignment and movement.
Art of Touch 2 takes that language further, with standing twists, more complex balancing poses such as Revolved Half Moon, deeper backbends, arm balances and a broader range of seated poses. We’ll also focus more deeply on integrating hands-on assists with verbal cuing into your teaching.
If you’re a 200-hour teacher from ISHTA or another 200-hour training and are looking for a practical introduction to hands-on assisting, Art of Touch 1 is a wonderful place to begin. If you’d like to deepen your understanding of touch and work with more complex postures, we encourage you to take both trainings.
These trainings may be taken as stand-alone trainings or as part of the ISHTA 300-Hour Teacher Training. Part 1 must be taken before Part 2.

We hope you’ll join us for this special opportunity to refine your skills, deepen your connection with your students and bring another dimension to your teaching.
