As a Prosthodontist in NYC, these are the 5 things that I wish every patient knew:
1. Brush your teeth BEFORE you drink your coffee. Brushing after can destroy the enamel. If you need a breath freshener, opt for a sugar-free mint or a quick swish of alcohol-free mouth rinse.
2. Yes, flossing really is that important! It’s the only way you’re cleaning between the teeth where they touch. Without it, you’re leaving behind plaque and food debris that can lead to gum disease.
3. Electric toothbrushes do the work for you! Don’t scrub with them. Instead, hold the head at a 45 degree angle towards the gums and let the brush work its magic.
4. If it hurts, chances are there’s a big problem beneath the surface. Small cavities don’t hurt. Regular check ups let us catch them early.
5. Just because your soda is sugar free doesn’t mean it’s healthy! Diet soda can wreak havoc on your mouth due to the acid content and disruption to the oral micro biome. If you’re going to drink it, keep it to meal times, finish it within 30 minutes and drink some water afterwards.
