Last Tuesday, the Pennsylvania department of health confirmed a fourth measles death, an 18-year-old who died from a rare neurological complication of measles. This death follows 3 other measles related deaths in Pennsylvania this year: that of a 40-year-old woman and two infants. None of the four individuals were vaccinated. Before these recent fatalities, Pennsylvania hadn’t recorded a measles-related death in 35 years.

The MMR vaccine is one of the most effective tools we have against measles, with two doses providing 97% protection. Message us to ensure your child is up to date with their MMR vaccines.

The AAP recently updated its recommendations for high-risk children that should receive RSV immunization in their second RSV season. RSV immunization recommendations for babies in their first RSV season are unchanged. We will begin administering RSV immunizations in October. September is Su***de Awareness Month. A suicidal crisis can happen very quickly. Research has found that many people who attempt su***de move from suicidal thoughts to action in a matter of minutes, not days. Importantly, teens who haven’t been diagnosed with any mental health condition can still be at risk. For help broaching this subject with your child, visit healthychildren.org and read the article titled “How to Talk About Mental Health With Your Child and Their Pediatrician.” Another excellent article for parents on healthychildren.org is titled “Su***de Prevention: 12 Things Parents Can Do.” If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician.

The best way to protect against measles is with two doses of the MMR vaccine. The MMR series prevents more than 97 percent of measles infections. More measles cases have been reported in 2026 in the US than in any year since the virus was declared eliminated in 2000. Outbreaks are occurring across the country. Two deaths from measles were recently reported in Pennsylvania. Last year, two children and one adult died from measles complications, the first deaths from measles in the US in a decade. Measles is particularly dangerous for unvaccinated children. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below or reach out to your healthcare provider. Does your child receive early intervention services? When your child turns three, their developmental services transition from early intervention to the school system. This transition can feel stressful or even scary. But many supports and resources can help parents navigate the process. If you feel overwhelmed, a friend, another parent, your pediatrician, or another health care professional can offer perspective and advice. You are not alone in this process.
