15+ years in this field and I’m still waiting for my love of hiking 🥾 and camping ⛺️ to kick in 😂

The “kinda chic” trend felt like the perfect way to say this: not everything looks the way you expect it to.

People hear “naturopathic doctor” and often have a very specific image in their head. And people can look at you and make assumptions too.

I grew up in New York, and I’ve always loved beauty, fashion, feeling feminine, getting dressed up, doing my hair and makeup 💄 while ALSO deeply believing in natural medicine and living in a way that supports my health.

‼️ Those things don’t have to contradict each other‼️

Natural medicine doesn’t have to look like sitting cross-legged saying “om,” living off green juice, bone broth, or fitting into some perfectly “crunchy” stereotype.

Sometimes it looks like making yourself a hot cup of tea in the morning. Eating a nourishing breakfast. Taking your supplements. Paying attention to your thoughts. Choosing the better option at a restaurant. Switching to cleaner beauty products. Getting outside (the way you LIKE). Prioritizing sleep. And making small choices every day that support the person you want to be.

You can care deeply about your health and still love lipstick, heels, restaurants, travel, fashion and a good blowout.

There’s no one aesthetic for wellness.

And there’s definitely no one way a naturopath has to look. 🤎

Tell me in the comments your “kinda chic” - and things you do as a person with a healthy lifestyle that often contradict “crunchy” lifestyle 👇

Just on the subway in deep in thought 💭

I use ChatGPT. You probably use ChatGPT. And I think AI can be an incredible tool.

But lately, I’m seeing more and more people use it as a substitute for actual medical care.

They are uploading their labs, adding all their symptoms and history and asking AI to figure out what’s wrong and what they should do next.

Here’s what I don’t want us to lose: *the art of medicine*

There is something incredibly valuable about a practitioner who works with real people, day after day, year after year.

Clinical experience creates pattern recognition. It teaches you what works on paper versus what actually works in a human being.

And sometimes, it gives you the intuition to ask the question that wasn’t on the algorithm’s list.

My own health journey has taught me things I could never have learned from a textbook alone. My patients have taught me even more.

Medicine isn’t always black and white. Labs are pieces of the puzzle 🧩 and they certainly not the whole person.

And root causes don’t always announce themselves neatly on a blood test.

So yes, use AI. Use it to help organize your plan. Create your grocery list. Schedule your supplements. Build your morning routine. Track your habits. Write down questions for your doctor. Let it help you stay accountable to the plan your practitioner created with you.

But don’t underestimate clinical intuition, lived experience, pattern recognition and the art of medicine.

AI can give you information.

A great practitioner knows what to do with it.

One of the biggest triggers for my migraines is my jaw—especially when I’m clenching from stress or when my TMJ feels irritated.

Because I have Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder and a sensitive nervous system, some treatments like direct jaw adjustments, intraoral work, and craniosacral therapy can sometimes feel too intense for me.

People with HSD and generalized joint hypermobility may be more susceptible to TMJ problems because the connective tissues supporting the jaw joint can be more lax and the joint may move beyond its ideal range. This can potentially contribute to clicking, irritation, muscle tension, jaw pain, temple pain, headaches, and migraines.

Of course you don’t have to be hypermobile though to experience pain and issues with your jaw.

In my personal experience, red light therapy has been the gentlest option and has made the biggest impact during a TMJ flare. Of course, what works for me may not work for everyone.

Healing from chronic illness has taught me how invaluable it is to have a chiropractor I trust who understands my sensitivity.

My mom sent me this Facebook memory from 11 years ago to tell me she was proud of me ♥️

I graduated from medical school believing that becoming a great doctor was about everything I learned in the classroom.

Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for the anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical training that gave me the foundation to practice medicine.

But if I’m honest, some of the lessons that have shaped me the most came after graduation.

Over the years, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease, Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD), mycotoxin illness, intracranial hypertension and a Chiari malformation.

As a patient, I learned what it feels like to be dismissed, to search endlessly for answers, to spend countless hours reading research, and to walk from doctor to doctor hoping someone would finally connect the dots.

Those experiences changed the way I practice medicine.

They taught me that healing isn’t just about finding the right diagnosis. It’s about listening. It’s about meeting people where they are. And it’s about creating a gentle, strategic plan that supports healing without overwhelming someone whose nervous system is already running on empty.

Many of our patients come to us burned out, discouraged, and exhausted after years of searching for answers. The last thing we want to do is add more stress to an already overwhelmed body.

Medical school taught me medicine.
Life taught me how to care for people.

I’m grateful for both. 🤍

🚨 Comment “BLOAT” below to get our FREE Bloating Blueprint Workbook!

More fiber always must be better right?!

More fiber *isn’t always* the answer to bloating and sometimes it can actually make it WORSE.

‼️ While fiber is essential for gut health, the type, amount, and why you’re bloated all matter.

If you’re dealing with:

👉Constipation
👉Slow gut motility
👉SIBO
👉Difficulty digesting certain carbohydrates

Then adding more fiber may INCREASE fermentation, gas, and bloating instead of relieving it.

The goal isn’t to avoid fiber—it’s to understand what’s causing your symptoms so you can choose the right approach for your body.

This is the reason we use Diagnostic Solutions Lab GI map to help make an individualized plan for our patients to make a roadmap and plan for healing their gut. ❤️‍🩹

If you’re tired of guessing, comment “BLOAT” and for an individualized approach, book a consultation with me so we can work through it together 🤝

✨ Can you guess what I’m taking with my Indian food? 👀

Answer: DAO (diamine oxidase)- Seeking Health brand by Dr. Ben Lynch is my go to.

As a hypermobile naturopathic doctor with Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder (HSD)—a connective tissue disorder that’s closely related to hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and shares many of its features, I’m more susceptible to mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). One of my biggest triggers? Histamine. Too much histamine can trigger migraines for me.

Indian food is one of my favorites, and while many of the spices (like turmeric, ginger, and cumin) have wonderful anti-inflammatory properties, some ingredients commonly found in Indian dishes—such as tomatoes, peppers, and certain long-simmered dishes can also be higher in histamine.

So does this mean I never eat Indian food?

Absolutely not. ❤️

Instead, I support my body by taking DAO (diamine oxidase) with the meal to help break down histamine from the food. It’s one of the tools that helps me enjoy the foods I love while reducing the likelihood of a histamine-induced migraine.

I also reduce other high histamine containing foods earlier in the day.

In fact, I recently had a conversation with a patient who became so stressed about avoiding every possible high-histamine food that the anxiety around eating started creating more digestive symptoms.

It was a great reminder that while nutrition matters, our relationship with food matters too. Chronic stress and fear around eating can become part of the problem.

This is such an important topic that I’ll dedicate an entire post to it because there’s so much more to unpack.

For now, I want you to remember this: Supporting your body doesn’t have to mean fearing food. Sometimes it’s about using the right tools, understanding your unique triggers, and making choices that allow you to nourish yourself without unnecessary restriction or anxiety.

✨ Work with your body, not against it.

Have you noticed certain foods triggering headaches, flushing, itching, congestion, or other histamine-related symptoms?

You are doing ALL the right things and your cholesterol is still high.

It can actually be stress. Burnout much?

Have you ever heard this before?

I usually triple check by requesting a 3 to 7 day diet diary from my patients so I can see if there are contributing factors in their diet that can be elevating their cholesterol.

If the diet is very nutritious, then one factor can be stress.

There are other factors that can raise cholesterol outside of diet, but I’ll leave that for another post!

Do you feel that this might be the case for you?

You don’t have to be upstate New York to get Lyme disease.

However, we know that dogs carry lots of ticks and we know that certain areas are more heavily infested by ticks than others.

After you get bit, you can have varying symptoms the next few weeks. Some people experience headaches, migraines, nausea, gastrointestinal upset, musculoskeletal, pain, neck, pain, fatigue, and more.

Some people describe it like they have the “flu”.

AND YOU DONT HAVE TO HAVE A RASH ‼️

The Lyme disease tests can be more accurate if you recently got bit by a tick vs you having chronic Lyme and bit by a tick many years ago.

Could this be something other than Lyme disease? Possibly. But it is absolutely essential to rule out Lyme in this case.

Most of the tests that conventional doctors are doing miss Lyme disease, and sometimes even with thorough Lyme testing, they can yield false negatives.

This is why it is imperative to look at the clinical picture and even if a lyme disease test comes out negative, a diligent doctor will treat as if especially if our diseases have been ruled out.

If you suspect you have chronic Lyme disease, or have been acutely bit, don’t hesitate to reach out to our practice to get the help you need. Our doctors are Lyme literate! Www.naturallysue.com
