Serves more than 12 million people in New York City; on Long Island; in Rockland and Westchester counties; at the U.S. We respond to approximately seven emergencies and disasters a day across the region—home fires, floods, building collapses—and more, providing shelter, food, clothing and emotional support at no cost to those in need. We also collect blood, teach lifesaving skills, and support military members, veterans and their families.

One month until the 2026 Long Island Heroes Celebration! ✨

As we count down to October 22, we're proud to announce Tom Von Essen as our 2026 Community Impact Legacy Hero.

For more than four decades, Tom has dedicated his life to public service and leadership. As New York City's Fire Commissioner during September 11, he helped lead the through one of the most challenging moments in our nation's history and has remained a passionate advocate for first responder health, safety and preparedness. His enduring commitment to serving others has left a lasting impact on communities throughout .

Stay tuned as we continue to introduce the inspiring honorees we'll celebrate at this year's Long Island Heroes Celebration.

Meet Katie Niehoff, one of our inspiring runners for the 2026 ! 🏃‍♀️

When her son was born, Katie experienced a life threatening condition called placenta accreta and received 14 units of blood to survive. The generosity of blood donors saved her life and inspired her family to start an annual blood drive on her son's birthday. Years later, that same journey led Katie to join the Red Cross, where she now serves as a Regional Disaster Officer.

Now, she's running to honor the people who gave her a second chance and to support a mission that helps people in their most vulnerable moments.

"I think about the people who donated blood so I could be here today. Every mile feels like a thank you." ❤️

Thank you to the donors who came out for the "Day of Remembrance" blood drives that we held the week of 9/11. Over 225 lifesaving units of blood was collected over two days!

Spectacular Saturday in Smithtown to help .

Thank you to the town of Smithtown, FRES commissioner Rudy Sunderman, town of Smithtown public safety, senior center, the Hauppage fire department and the Nesconset Fire department for joining together to help make families safer across the community.

Together we visited 62 homes to install 282 smoke alarms and provide fire safety education to 146 people.

Supporting communities after disasters big and small is a central mission for our home fire volunteers.

After a home fire sadly took a life in Yonkers, this team met in the neighborhood and distributed information to 240 homes, to provide fire safety information and sign up residents for a free safety visit and smoke alarm installation.

Thank you to the team for supporting our neighbors in Yonkers during this difficult time.
