Stand clear of the closing doors, please!” 🔊

IYKYK! I ran into Charlie Pellett, the iconic voice behind the NYC subway announcement on the way home today.

For so many of the subway-loving kids I work with in speech therapy, his voice is more recognizable than any Hollywood celebrity!

Even more exciting? There’s a new documentary coming out called Railfan, celebrating autistic kids in NYC who share a deep love and passion for the subway system. We can’t wait to see these incredible kids and their interests celebrated on screen! Charlie Pellett

A toy that matches exactly what a child already loves 😜

One of our kiddos LOVES watching diving videos and the visual sensation of watching someone move quickly through the water. So when we spotted this Waterslide toy at Barnes & Noble, we knew we had to bring it into speech therapy!

Using a highly motivating toy like this gives us so many natural opportunities to work on language: “ready, set, go!” “down!” “again!” “fast!” “my turn!” plus requesting, commenting, turn-taking, and shared attention.

Speech therapy doesn’t always have to look like “work.” Sometimes the best learning happens when we follow a child’s interests and build communication around what already brings them joy. 💙🌊

🚨 Social thinking book alert!!

Check out this amazing book about navigating two big feelings by Slumberkins. It offers such great insight into big emotions, helps normalize them for kids, and even brings a little humor into those overwhelming moments.

A must-have for helping little ones understand that it’s okay to feel more than one big feeling at once

NMES works! I’ve always leaned toward a food-first approach in feeding therapy. And now I am been incorporating Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) into my practice. NMES works at the neuromuscular junction to stimulate muscle contraction over a period of time. It helps to facilitate swallowing, chewing, and overall oral motor movement.

For individuals with impaired swallow function, this can be a powerful way to “wake up” and strengthen the muscles involved, creating new opportunities for safer and more efficient feeding.

Still rooted in function and research. Just expanding the toolbox.

Bringing baby up to the kitchen helper = game changer 👶🍽️

When they’re right there with you, watching, touching, and sharing the moment, food becomes more than just eating—it’s connection, modeling, and learning. When they are Closer to you, Closer to the food they are More likely to explore + enjoy eating.

It’s not about making a separate “baby meal”… it’s about making them part of your meal.

Messy? Yes.
Worth it? Always.

Lingual (tongue) cupping is a reflex in the infants mouth which triggers the tongue shape into a bowl position. The tongue lifts up and cups forward on to the ridge of the gum line. This is one of four markers we assess in tight latch, suck and seal during infant feeding.

Typically we look for four different inter oral movement markers when assessing a latch or suction.
1. Lingual cupping - described above
2. Lingual lifting - the upward movement of the tongue to the top of the mouth
3. Lingual Extension - the exertion of the tongue to the gum line
4. The rhythmical wave - the movements during the coordination of oral markers 1-3.

When babies come in to our practice we assess the movements and coordination of these markers to determine causations and correlations for feeding and latching challenges. Then we work on therapeutic techniques to help create good latch and refer out when needed.

Invariably, we also ask questions about prior sucking and latching history for children coming in with feeding issues at ages 6 months and up. By looking at the history of feeding challenges we can narrow down anatomical issues from physiological issues which might be contributing to the challenges during mealtime. When families come to us looking for an apraxia evaluation we can help BUT if the child is thumb sucking or is on the pacifier it is extremely difficult to parse out the resulting errors from apraxia and the errors resulting from a muscular disorder like tongue thrust and learned low resting posture of the tongue.

This two year child came to us in January with and potential diagnosis of apraxia which we later diagnosed in February.

However it was difficult to determine where errors resulted from. Now that the child has been free from the pacifier for a few months we are working on a combination of apraxia treatment and orofacial myology treatment.
