Last week, Eye-Bank staff traveled to Indianapolis, IN, to attend the Eye Bank Association of America's (EBAA) Annual Meeting. This year's meeting was particularly meaningful as it was Executive Director & CEO Edwin Robert’s first EBAA Annual Meeting since his appointment as our organization's leader. Communications Director Maria Chelko, who is the incoming chair of the EBAA's Donor, Partner, and Community Relations Committee, presented in a panel on "Utilizing Your Eye Bank's History," and, as the 2025 winner, former Communications Director Noel Mick Moschetta presented the 2026 Leonard Heise Award, the highest non-medical distinction in our profession, to Chris Hanna of the Utah Lions Eye Bank in recognition of his outstanding devotion to the EBAA's development. Along with other former Communications Optics Award Winners, Maria gathered for a group photo to congratulate this year's Optics Award winner Caroline Miller from Eversight.

Thank you to the EBAA for providing such a wonderful opportunity for eye bankers across the country to collaborate, learn, and celebrate successes. See you next year!

May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich histories, cultures and contributions of AANHPI communities across the United States. In recognition of the observance, Eye-Bank Quality Assurance Supervisor Christina Amoroso shared reflections on her Thai and Filipino heritage, including favorite cultural foods and what being Asian American means to her. She also spoke about the importance of The Eye-Bank’s mission and the meaningful impact its work has on New Yorkers in need. The Eye-Bank is proud to serve a diverse and vibrant metropolitan community that includes a large Asian American population.

Thank you to 3 Day Weekend and Shower Beers who raised $2,700 for The Eye-Bank’s sight-saving programs at their incredible concert on May 15! We would like to give a special shout out to the band, which includes Eye-Bank Leadership Council members Joe O’Hagan and Nick Ugarte, who turned an amazing night of live music into meaningful support for our mission. This week, we had our first Eye-Bank full-staff meeting under the leadership of our newly appointed Executive Director & CEO Edwin Roberts. Edwin thanked our team for their hard work and dedication and shared his excitement about the future of our historic organization. The meeting also featured a very special guest; cornea transplant recipient Ellen Yoshiuchi. Ellen shared her story and expressed her sincere gratitude to our staff for working 24/7 to ensure that New Yorkers like her receive the gift of sight. Big thanks to the Hospital & Community Liaison Team, the Development Department, and the Ocular Laboratory for presenting updates about the great work they are doing to support our mission of sight restoration.

The Eye-Bank's Patricia Dahl Ocular Tissue Research Program provides quality donor eye tissue and customized donor cells to researchers both locally and abroad. The program was recently renamed in honor of Ms. Dahl's retirement and her extraordinary 45-year career in the field of eye banking.
