Last weekend, Donor Mother and Eye-Bank Board member Andrea Nordquist shared her story at the annual Long Island TRIO (Transplant Recipients International Organization) rose garden rededication ceremony. Ms. Nordquist's son, Christopher, became an eye donor and gave the gift of sight when he passed away tragically at the age of two. The rose garden event honors eye, organ and tissue donors like Christopher and celebrates their memory. The families of 175 donor heroes attended. Each donor’s name was called and their loved ones were presented with a rose and a hand-painted memento in recognition of the donor's generosity and lasting legacy.

September, National DMV Appreciation Month, is coming to a close, but the Eye-Bank's gratitude to DMV and Driver License Partner (DLP) teams across the country extends throughout the year! This past month, to show our appreciation for the local DMV staff who help make donor registration possible, The Eye-Bank’s Hospital and Community Liaison team partnered with Donate Life New York State to visit DMV offices throughout our service area and deliver Donate Life-branded Life Savers candies. It was a small but meaningful way to say thank you to the people who help give New Yorkers the opportunity to say “Yes” to donation and to recognize DMV employees as some of New York’s true lifesavers, helping to restore sight, save and heal lives every day.

The October 2 application deadline for the Eye Bank Association of America’s (EBAA) Mary Jane O’Neill Fellowship in International Eye Banking is just a few days away! If you are an eye banker working abroad, this is a wonderful opportunity to visit an EBAA-member eye bank and attend the EBAA Annual Meeting. Application information can be found at

The fellowship was established by both the EBAA and The Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration in 2001 to honor Mary Jane O’Neill, The Eye-Bank’s Executive Director from 1980 to 2000. During her tenure in eye banking, Ms. O’Neill was a forward-thinking visionary who championed international outreach, devoting significant efforts to establish and improve eye banking services worldwide.

The 2027 Mary Jane O’Neill Fellowship will bring an individual to the United States for a two-week period in June 2027 to intern at an EBAA-member eye bank and attend the EBAA Annual Meeting, June 10-12, in Austin, Texas. Once a Fellow is selected, the EBAA will work with the eye bank and the Fellow to determine the actual dates of the program.

The application deadline for The Eye-Bank's $10,000 R. Townley Paton Fellowship for research in ophthalmology is just around the corner! The fellowship is open to all ophthalmology disciplines and vision sciences. It was established to support basic science and clinical research to discover possible treatments and cures of blinding eye diseases. Applicants must be graduates of an accredited medical school or school of osteopathic medicine, hold an ECFMG certificate, or be current candidates or graduates of a PhD program. Fellowship research must take place within The Eye-Bank’s service area of New York City, Long Island, or the Lower Hudson Valley. The application deadline is October 15, 2026. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! The Eye-Bank’s latest testimonial video features Yolanda, a local cornea transplant recipient who was born in Caracas, Venezuela, where she grew up speaking Spanish. Yolanda loved the language and studied Spanish language and literature in college. She was kind enough to share her story with us for both the English- and Spanish-language versions of our website.

If you’re a student enrolled in a 2 or 4-year program, don’t miss your chance to apply for one of our two $3,000 academic scholarships: The Young Ambassador Scholarship and the STEM Scholarship.
