The internet loves a diagnosis. Especially when it comes to someone else’s relationship.
A glance becomes evidence. A facial expression becomes a red flag. A 10-second clip becomes proof that a marriage is falling apart.
But here’s what we know from a psychological perspective: We are wired to make assumptions, fill in missing information, and seek evidence that confirms what we already believe. It’s called confirmation bias.
And social media is very good at reinforcing it.
The truth? We can observe behavior without pretending we understand the entire relationship behind it.
Not everything we notice is something we know.
Sometimes the most psychologically informed response is simply, “I don’t have enough information to draw that conclusion.”
