A study showed that participants consumed more calories and were an average of two pounds heavier after one week of sleeping only about five hours a day.

If you didn't know already, acupuncture is the best (and usually the only method also combined w herbs) way to treat strokes but little is known in the US of this. Sooner the better. Glad this is being publicized more.

As an acupuncturist in practice for more than 20 years, I am trained in the Xing Nao Kai Qiao stroke rehabilitation acupuncture therapy. I have seen some amazing results in stroke and dementia patients.

Looks like eastern medicine can be your next attention grabbing topic at a party according to huffington post. Lol but of course try it in 2013 because you simply want to get healthy. :)

The driving idea behind acupuncture is that we're already in possession of everything we need to be well. Acupuncture does not add or subtract anything. Rather, it prompts the body to do what it already knows how to do. It reminds you that you have the power to heal yourself.

"Research has shown that having purpose and meaning in life increases overall well-being and life satisfaction, improves mental and physical health, enhances resiliency, enhances self-esteem, and decreases the chances of depression. On top of that, the single-minded pursuit of happiness is ironically leaving people less happy,.."It is the very pursuit of happiness, that thwarts happiness."

"The more one forgets himself -- by giving himself to a cause to serve or another person to love --...we are acknowledging that that there is more to the good life than the pursuit of simple happiness."

Meaning comes from the pursuit of more complex things than happiness

Today is "Winter Solstice 동지 冬至", which is essentially the height of winter where we experience the longest night (highest point of yin) and shortest day (the beginning of yang).

On this day to celebrate, Koreans traditionally eat Sweet Red Bean Porridge (단팥죽) with little glutinous rice balls (새알심) in them, and Chinese eat either Tang Yuan (湯圓), which are sweet glutinous rice balls as well, or wontons (餛飩) and dumplings (餃子) to replenish the qi that has been lost due to the harsh winter cold.

Evidently the world is suppose to end today according to the mayans. Why not grab a bowl of red bean porridge or some dumplings beforehand? :D

Happy winter solstice!

Today (11/7) marks the first day of winter, otherwise called "Li D**g 立冬 입동" according to the 24 solar terms (24節氣) of the East Asian calendar.

In literal translation "Lì 立" means to "establish and start", and "Dōng 冬" means "winter." But in Classical Chinese it also holds the meaning of "to end" or "finish."

What does this mean? It means the beginning of winter marks the ending of harvest and gathering of the hard-earned crops from the year, and with it we need to store up and stow away to prepare for the cold winter.

This is directly related to what we need to do for our own bodies (both physically and mentally) as well. The days are shorter and nights are longer now and thus, according to the oldest medical text in the world called the "Huang Di Nei Jing 黃帝內徑", we are to "preserve 收藏" ourselves in preparation for the next season by adhering to the following principles:

1. Sleep early, wake up later.
2. Less outdoor activity compared to summer.
3. Don't expose yourself to cold unnecessarily.

Sort of like the bears getting ready for hibernation. :)

Although this doesn't mean never come out of your apartment and never exercise.

So what you do now will become the foundation for what state your body will end up being in the spring ("冬伤于寒,春必病温"). And yes, spring time allergies fits right into this category.

And look! It's snowing! Right on time. Happy first snow everyone! :D
