Welcome to the Spotlight Series! I'll be highlighting key components of neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and emotional based disorders.
π§ Learning Disabilities
π Learning disabilities are a pattern of underachievement and underperformance in academic skills, including reading, writing, and math. Individuals with learning disabilities typically have intact intellectual functioning (IQ) but struggle to learn a particular academic skill(s).
Having a Learning Disability does NOT mean you're not smart! Many individuals with a learning disability in one area have average skills or excel in other areas.
In severe cases, learning disabilities can be diagnosed as early as kindergarten, but they most commonly become clear around 3rd grade.
Signs of learning disabilities include poor phonics, poor word reading, letter & number reversals, poor math skills, language challenges, poor spelling, and challenges with putting your thoughts into writing.
The great news is, if you identify it early, there are very well established and effective interventions to remediate academic skill deficits. Do not wait!
If you have any concerns about your child's learning, reach out to your child's school support staff (or a neuropsychologist, like me!) and request a psychoeducational evaluation. If you have concerns as an adult, contact a neuropsychologist, like me!
Ask Dr. Anne: What questions do you have about learning disabilities?
