Recently, I had the honor of presenting the Sharsheret Maimonides Award to my friend and colleague, Dr. Oren Lerman — someone I’ve known since we were fourteen, growing up together in the Five Towns. Standing at that podium, I was reminded that the strongest surgeons aren’t the ones who claim to know everything, but the ones confident enough to ask a trusted colleague, “What do you think?”

Medicine can feel like a zero-sum competition. But real collegiality — sharing knowledge, mentoring the next generation, celebrating each other’s wins — is what actually lifts patient care. As Pirkei Avot teaches: true honor comes from honoring others.
