When I was a little girl, I used to put on my Grandma’s heels and her “Cherries in the Snow” lipstick (by ) and sing “Sweet Transvestite” in the living room for my family as part of my own personal show.
I had absolutely no idea what the song meant!! I didn’t even understand the word at the time!
But I understood that Dr. Frank-N-Furter was deliciously theatrical - and I wanted to channel THAT!
made a character come to life that gave me permission to be … theatrical.
The irony of losing Tim Curry in the same week as losing Dolly Parton does not escape me. These two wildly different icons taught exactly the same lesson:
Find out who you are—and then have the courage to be ALL of it.
Dolly did it in rhinestones, stilettos and her signature hair.
Tim Curry’s Frank-N-Furter did it in fishnets, platform heels and enough shimmering lip gloss to be visible across several state lines!!
…and Frank-N-Furter was my first introduction to the glorious world of drag - and I fell madly in love!
He taught generations of young musical-theater girls (and boys!) to be outrageous. To think outside the box. To make your point- and make it more theatrical. To take up space.…and whenever possible, do it wearing the hottest, sparkliest platform heels you can find.(This explains why I dress this way!)
50 years later, we’re still doing the Time Warp!
That’s not just a legacy - it’s a movement!
Dolly’s lesson: “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”
Is amplified by Tim Curry’s Frank-N-Furter: “Don’t dream it. Be it.”
Two icons. Two completely different packages.
But their powerful message lives on forever inside me and, hopefully, all the other young quirky dreamers who hope to be their full, loud selves. 💖💎✨👠
