Want to reduce some of the back-to-school friction before it starts?

Try a family meeting.

And before you roll your eyes…hear me out. 😉

Doesn’t need to be formal.
Doesn’t need to last an hour.

Even 20 minutes 1x/week can create a powerful shift in handling inevitable challenges of a new school year.

You might talk about:
🎒 Morning routines
📚 Homework
📱 Screens on school nights
🚗 Carpool or transportation
🍎 Lunches
⏰ Bedtimes
🏠 Chores
😤 Something that’s been causing friction

But here’s the important part✨:
Don’t make the meeting a parent-led announcement of new rules.

Invite everyone’s voice.
“What’s working well?”
“What’s making school days harder?”
“What problem should we solve together?”
“What ideas do you have?”

Then brainstorm🧠.
Their voice doesn’t automatically determine the outcome. But their voice matters.

The message underneath
⬇️⬇️
“We’re a team. We have problems in this family, and we solve them together.”

When Things Go Wrong
⬇️
The backpack was forgotten.
The homework didn’t get done.
The lunch came home untouched.
The morning completely fell apart.

🤦‍♀️And your first instinct?
“How many times have I told you?”

Totally understandable.

But here’s a back-to-school shift I encourage parents to try:
⬇️
Trade the lecture for curiosity.

Instead of immediately explaining why your child should have remembered, try:
💬 “What happened?”
Listen.
Then ask:
💬 “What do you think you could try differently tomorrow?”

Notice the difference❓

A lecture gives your child your solution.

Curiosity gives your child the opportunity to develop their own problem-solving skills.

That’s a much bigger long-term goal.

Eventually, you’re not going to be standing in the doorway reminding them about their backpack.

You want them to work towards self inquiry 🧐, “I forgot it yesterday. What can I do tonight to make sure I remember it tomorrow?”

✨That’s executive functioning.
✨That’s responsibility.
✨That’s growing capability.

And yes, sometimes your child will come up with a solution that you don’t love.

We’re not removing limits or expectations.
We’re changing the way we help children learn from them.

Back-to-school is not just about getting everyone out the door.

It’s an opportunity to practice capability, responsibility, resilience, and repair.

None of those require a perfect morning.

Back-to-school doesn’t have to mean back-to-power-struggles.

Somewhere between summer freedom and the first school bell, many families hit the same wall.

🙃Bedtimes have drifted.
🙃Mornings have gotten slower.
And suddenly everyone is expected to wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast, find shoes, pack backpacks… and somehow be out the door on time. 😅

If you’re already thinking,
“How am I going to get my child back into a routine without losing my mind?”

⬇️Start here:

Connection before correction

Before launching into reminders, lectures, or a new list of expectations, take a few minutes to connect.

💬 “What are you excited about this school year?”
💬 “What are you feeling nervous about?”
💬 “What do you think will be easy?”
💬 “What do you think might be hard?”

And then…listen.

That conversation isn’t taking time away from school preparation.

It ✨IS ✨school preparation.

Children are much more willing to problem-solve with us when they feel connected to us, not managed by us.

Instead of creating the “perfect” routine for your child, create it WITH them.
⬇️
“What needs to happen every morning so we aren’t rushing?”

Include them in deciding the steps. Write them down. For younger children, draw pictures.

And then let the routine be the boss.

Instead of:
“Get dressed.”
“Did you brush your teeth?”
“Where’s your backpack?”
“Come on! We’re going to be late!”

Try:
“What’s next on your routine?”

That small shift moves us from enforcer to coach.

And that’s the real goal of back-to-school: not raising a child who follows every instruction perfectly, but helping them gradually develop the skills to manage themselves.

The first few mornings may still be messy.

That’s okay.

Connection + structure + practice will take you much further than pressure ever will.

The Secret Conversation Starter with Tweens & Teens
⬇️

One thing I often hear from parents about their tweens/ teens is:

“She doesn’t talk to me anymore.”

“Everything feels like one-word answers.”

“I miss when he wanted to spend time with me.”

Reading Daniel Pink’s recent summary of research on joy reminded me of something I see over and over in my coaching with families.

Connection doesn’t always begin with conversation.

Often...

✔️Connection begins with shared experiences.

✔️A walk after dinner.

✔️Singing in the car.

✔️Shooting hoops.

✔️Cooking together.

✔️Playing cards.

✔️Dancing while cleaning the kitchen.

✔️Laughing over something completely ridiculous.

Research suggests these joyful moments do more than make us feel good - they help calm our nervous systems, lower stress, and strengthen our relationships.

And when our nervous systems are calmer...

Our children are more likely to feel emotionally vulnerable.

Emotionally connected children - and yes, even teenagers - are more likely to open up.

Not because we asked better questions, BUT because we built another small deposit into our relationship.

As we head into the final weeks before school begins, here’s a question I’m asking myself:

✨When was the last time I intentionally created joy with my child - not to teach a lesson, but simply to enjoy being together?

Those moments may seem ordinary today.

Years from now, they may be the memories your child carries with them.

[Inspired by Daniel Pink’s recent reflections on the science of joy and research from Barbara Fredrickson and other leading scientists studying positive emotion, connection, and health.]

♥️Joy Isn’t a Reward - It’s Part of Raising Healthy Kids

This month, I came across a thoughtful post by author ✨Daniel Pink, who shared research on something many of us unintentionally overlook:

Joy isn’t optional. It’s good for our health.

He highlighted studies showing that:

✨ Laughter lowers stress hormones and improves blood flow.

🤍 Hugs can actually help protect us from illness and reduce the impact of stress.

🎵 Singing with others helps calm our nervous systems.

💃 Dancing has even been linked to a significantly lower risk of dementia later in life.
———
Reading this made me think...

As parents, especially of tweens and teens, we spend so much energy helping our children become responsible.
⬇️
*Encourage good grades.
*Healthy habits.
*Sports.
*Chores.
*Screen limits.
*Sleep.

Those things absolutely matter.

But somewhere along the way, many of us begin treating joy like it’s something we earn after everything else is done.

Our children notice that.

They learn what adulthood looks like by watching us.

Do they see someone who only works?

♥️Or someone who also laughs...
plays...
connects...
celebrates...
and makes room for joy?

What if joy isn’t taking us away from raising healthy kids?

What if it’s one of the ways we raise emotionally healthy kids?

This week, don’t wait until everything is crossed off your to-do list.

Laugh together.

Play a game.

Turn on your favorite song while making dinner.

Let your children see that taking care of yourself also means making room for joy.

Sometimes that’s one of the greatest gifts we can model.

[Inspired by research shared by Daniel Pink, drawing on work from Barbara Fredrickson, Michael Miller (University of Maryland), Carnegie Mellon University researchers, and others exploring the connection between joy, health, and human flourishing.]

A New Academic Year Begins 🎓✨

Last week was a packed 3-Day National Training for Hispanic Federation’s CREAR Futuros program. We brought together college upperclassmen, representing the program’s 15 college and university partners, who are hired mentors that will support the retention, persistence and graduation of Latino students.

A new academic year is more than a new beginning - it’s an opportunity to build confidence, strengthen connections, and come together to kick off another year of impact 🙌.

👔💙 Happy Father’s Day!

Fathers play a powerful role in shaping a child’s confidence, resilience, and future success.

Research shows:

📊 Children with actively involved fathers are:

✅ 43% more likely to earn mostly A’s in school
✅ More likely to develop strong emotional regulation skills
✅ Less likely to experience behavioral challenges
✅ More likely to build healthy relationships as adults

Studies have also found that positive father involvement is linked to higher self-esteem, better social skills, and improved mental well-being throughout life.

Being a father isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence.

Every conversation, bedtime story, game played, lesson taught, and moment shared helps build a stronger foundation for a child’s future.

Yesterday- and may it be every day - we celebrated the dads, grandfathers, stepfathers, mentors, and father figures who show up with love, guidance, and support.

💙 Thank you for making a lasting difference.

😖You Never Listen😖
Teen: “You never listen to me.”

Parent: “That’s not true. I listen all the time.”

Teen: “No, you don’t.”

Parent: “Give me one example.”

Teen: “See? This is exactly what I mean.”
🙈
Notice what happened here?
Here is when many parents are trying to defend themselves.

But what if connection mattered more than being right?
———————-
⬇️A different response⬇️

Teen: “You never listen to me.”

Parent: “hmmm, ok. I’m going to stop myself. I’m listening. Tell me more.”

Teen: “Every time I talk about school, you jump straight into fixing it.”

Parent: “Thank you for being willing to tell me more. Do you want advice right now, or do you just want me to listen?”
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
The goal isn’t to win the conversation.

The goal is to create enough emotional safety that your child wants to keep talking.

At Self Balanced Solutions, I help parents move from defensiveness to curiosity because connection is often built in the moments that feel the hardest.
